control dvd playback & navigation with keyboard only

Postby cybmole » 06 May 2010 21:13

I can "almost" fully control my playback of DVDs in VLC using only my cyberlink remote to emulate a keyboard, plus some creative customisationm of hot keys, but sometimes I get stuck on DVD root or title menus as the only way forward is to use a sinlg left mouse click to select a menu item. I need a way to do that with a keyboard key, then I can setup my remote to emulate it.

so the question could have been rephrased as "how can I control DVd playback in VLC without a mouse "

is there a customisation or workaround for this problem, please

I believe you can remap the keys for navigation in the preferences (arrows per default)

in hotkeys I have up / down arrows assigned to DVD navigation ( a default setting ? ) , but I also have them assigned to fullscreen on / off. & the latter takes precedence always. I want to only use keys that I can emulate on my remote so I have limited options. if there was a full screen toggle option that would reduce number of keys neede by one, but I don't think there is ( except as a bug in 1.1.0 where up arrow is currently togglingthe fullscreen and preforming as per its hot key definition )

I find that different DVDs use different navigtgion techniques within menus e.g. in some you need to moew to a next or a nome button to progress, in some arty/trendy onee you have to hover over & click a particular screen area - easy with a mouse, hard without.

one program that copes consistently well is Powerdvd ( + it's own remote), but it lacks some of my favourite VLC features! Zoomplayer does not work well - it tries to sense when it's in DVD mode & swtch key assignments but I struggele to get it to work consistently.

the vlc hotkey for return to DVD menu does not always get things right. IN powerdvd there's the notion of title menu & root menu. , and the menu key on their remote seems to chosse the right one everytime. But vlc will sometimes only return to title menu so you can't escape to other sections of the DVD, just via keyboard

toggle fullscreen is 'f' by default and is not a bug.

thanks - so that's a change since 1.05 then ?

on my PC which is still runnign 1.05 ( or maybe 1.03) it does not toggle.

& the hotkey screen still says , in effct, assign a key to enter fullscreen, assign (another) key to exit fullscreen

let me just confirm that - yes v 1.10 hot keys screen lines 1 &2:
action column :
line 1:fullscreen ,
line2: leave fullscreen...

fullscreen is a TOGGLE.
yes I heard you the 1st time - but since when.

it's not documented as such and did not work that way from 0.9x through to 1.05 ???

less defensiveness, more explanation would be appreciated.

if it's intended to be a TOGGLE, as you say, then why is a "leave fullscreen " hot key assignment button ALSO CONSIDERED necessary

No, it was a toggle since a long time on Windows, probably 0.8.2 but some bug was blocking it to work in some occasion.
Leave fullscreen exists, because someon needed it.

OK - I've been using the program since v0.9x series & I've never seen it toggle until now, but I beleive you if you say that's how it is supposed to be.

so is there a release note sdocumentation for v1.10 somehere that would have told me about this i.e. would tell me what bugs were fixed in this release, and would it have named this issue

There is a very long changelog on that.

OK - where do I find / view the changelogs, or are then only available to developers ?
