VLC 1.1.0 audio dropouts while streaming mp3?

Postby MWarner » 22 Jun 2010 18:47

I did a few searches in the forum, but didn't find this question listed with the new version.

I'm experiencing audio dropouts (about 1/4 of a second) every 10-15 seconds while streaming from multiple sites. One well known site, http://www.twit.am/listen , the TWiT.AM audio stream does the exact same thing. I tweaked the http-buffer in VLC to see if that might be the problem, but even giving it a 8000ms buffer, I still got the audio dropouts. Uninstalling 1.1 and reinstalling 1.0.5 solved the problem and all audio streams sound fine now including Twit.am. No dropouts while running 1.0.5, but regular dropouts while running 1.1. I did do a clean install with delete all preferences with the 1.1 install before reverting.

Win 7 x64, 4GB ram, Dual core 2.92Ghz.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Seems to happen in here also. You get something like

Code: Select all

main debug: audio output is starving (166000), playing silence main warning: audio drift is too big (-120500), clearing out main warning: timing screwed, stopping resampling main warning: buffer is 38331234000 late, triggering upsampling main warning: mixer start isn't output start (-36864)
to message log when this happens?

I'm glad someone else hears it. For some reason, I can't get logging to work with VLC on my Windows box, so I can't confirm what you are seeing. Wild thing is that I hear the same issue with different mp3 streaming services... so it isn't just Twit. Plus, the fact that 1.0.5 plays just fine leads me to believe something is different in 1.1.

Thanks for your confirmation and your help.

I'm experiencing similar dropouts on all streaming MP3 audio, but also playing any locally-stored MP3 audio files.

It began when I installed 1.1.0 on my 3.0 GHz P4 Windows XP system. No other audio app has this problem on my system.

For now, I've gone back to using Winamp.

Thanks for the tip for logging. :) On the Twit.Am feed, I'm getting pretty much what you posted.. here are two events:

Code: Select all

main warning: audio drift is too big (-120250), clearing out main warning: timing screwed, stopping resampling main warning: buffer is 69104000 late, triggering upsampling main warning: mixer start isn't output start (-40960) main debug: audio output is starving (286032), playing silence main warning: output date isn't PTS date, requesting resampling (-41032) main warning: audio drift is too big (-120064), clearing out main warning: timing screwed, stopping resampling main warning: buffer is 78680000 late, triggering upsampling main warning: mixer start isn't output start (-42760) main debug: audio output is starving (217032), playing silence
On another mp3 feed, I get the following:

Code: Select all

main warning: output date isn't PTS date, requesting resampling (50000) main warning: audio drift is too big (-121001), clearing out main warning: timing screwed, stopping resampling main warning: buffer is 371971000 late, triggering upsampling main warning: mixer start isn't output start (-15624) main debug: audio output is starving (167063), playing silence main error: ES_OUT_SET_(GROUP_)PCR is called too late (pts_delay increased to 1311 ms) main error: ES_OUT_RESET_PCR called
which looks similar, with a few more error codes tucked away in there. I hope this helps find out exactly what is going on...

Again, the help is much appreciated. Cheers

I also found streeming was sounding really bad using 1.1.0. So I went back to 1.0.5 and streeming is great again.
