Running Multiple Instances of VLC

Postby augustwest » 15 May 2010 15:32

Hi again,

I just updated my VLC to 1.0.5 and now it won't let me run more than one instance of VLC. I've used VLC for years and always was able to run more than one instance. I've gone into tools and preferences and unchecked the box to allow for more than one instance, but it doesn't work. I've seen guidance to go into the user control panel and make changes there but I have no idea where that is or how to access it. Kind of technically challenged I guess. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I LOVE VLC!!!!

Can you start multiple instances if you double click vlc.exe multiple times?

Yes. It's only when I double click on the video file that it only allows one instance. I had it set up in .9xx that each time I clicked on a video file it would open a new window.

Does it help if you remove %appdata%\vlc folder?

Hi,

I had already tried that fix suggested elsewhere. Should have mentioned that. I tried it again----I pasted the address %appdata%\vlc in the explorer bar and deleted that folder under users on the C drive and it didn't help.

I just saw this suggestion but don't understand how to edit the prefrences.

If you're starting vlc by dblclick on a file, you should edit your user's vlc preference : vlcrc (in user's dir /.vlc or appdata\vlc ) , and be sure those 2 option are set to false :
one-instance=0
one-instance-when-started-from-file=0

Open the file in notepad. And look those variables and change them, then press save, then start VLC.

I'm just an idiot. I opened up the file in notepad, made the changes from '1' to '0', clicked saved and restarted VLC to no avail. Still only one instance. So, I deleted the entire contents of that appdata file for VLC and then made the changes to VLCRC but still no luck. What am I doing wrong? It now seems so easy but the changes just don't take. When I go back into the VLCRC file, it's changed back to '1' instead of '0'.

in the new vlc there is two options for multiple instances

open the prefrences and go show all settings instead of simple (bottom left). the first window that pops up should have 3 check boxes at the bottom. the middle one is "one instance when started from file" simply uncheck it and save and restart the program.

Use 1.1.0 where this is better handled.
