Axis mkv file - no video in VLC 1.0.1

Postby jacco » 12 Aug 2009 17:17

When trying to play a .mkv file generated by a Axis Q1755 with VLC it shows no video
The debug concole of VLC show the following error:

non-existing PPS 0 referenced
decode_slice_header error
no frame!

FFmpeg gives the same error

when playing the file with wmp+axis matroska splitter it works fine

How kan I play this file with VLC?

EDIT:
the .conf file that comes with the .mkv has the following content

[Recording]
RecordingUUID=f68f9ca8-8736-11de-8a42-00408c944b97

No, it does not make any differance.

Still same message in both orginal file and remuxed file for vlc, mencoder and ffempg:

Error while decoding stream #0.0
[h264 @ 0x3ee160]non-existing PPS referenced
[h264 @ 0x3ee160]decode_slice_header error
[h264 @ 0x3ee160]no frame!

MPCHC doesn't play the file either. So I am guessing it isn't following the specs or it has been damaged.

I am guessing that they are doing some sort of playback trick to make it work but I don't know what they are doing. So I don't know if this could be fixed with some code changes.

Hello,

The reason the files are not playable in VLC is that the .mkv file does not have the correct codec_privat (I think that is what it is called) data set.
That is the information found in the .conf file and it is used by the Axis Matroska Splitter.

Has anyone found a way to correct that codec_privat setting or get the Axis Matroska Splitter to work with VLC? I hate having to use WMP to view the videos.

Hi All

The only way to playback/stream/transcode the Axis MKV files with VLC(Windows only) I've found:
1) download and install VH Multi camera studio(free) from the NET(google will help)... I test it with ver.1.1.8;
2) download and install AXIS Matroska File Splitter(free) from the Axis site(http://www.axis.com/techsup/software/index.htm);
3) start VH MultiCam with the Axis mkv file. Enable output to VH MultiCam video capture device(Tools). You could exit the program now(all settings are saved);
4) start VLC and feed it with VHMultiCam DirectShow device and then Playback/Stream/Transcode. It will start the new instance of VHMultiCam from the beginning of the file automatically. If you want to rewind,- just rightclick on VHMultiCam and do it.

So I opened a case with Axis technical support, and they sent me a new beta firmware version that fixes this problem. A compliant mkv file is created that you can play on VLC and Avidemux (those are the only two programs I tried). Hooray!

The beta firmware I got was for the Axis Q1755 camera, but I don't think I have permission to post it here. So if you want to get playable mkv files, you will probably have to contact Axis tech support. Here is the filename I was given:

Code: Select all

Q1755_Test-firmware_CST191491-Overlay-time-fix.bin
