VLC problems with 1080p MKV files 8GB+

Postby mikekieran » 26 Apr 2010 07:31

Hello everyone, let me please thank you in advance for any advice you can give me. So here is the problem:

I use a Core 2 Duo 8400 with 4 GB RAM and a 9800GTX+. I never used to have problems with my files, I watched a 1080p movie around 6-7 months ago, it was over 8GB and it ran perfectly. I received another couple 1080p MKVs from a friend which are all over 8 GB and I am having a problem running them. The 4 GB 720p MKVs play fine, but whenever I play a 1080p large MKV file the exact same thing happens every time. It runs fine through the opening credits, but then when it reaches the actual movie the video just stalls, audio plays perfectly. If I try to drag the bar the skip halfway through the movie same thing. I pause and unpause and sometimes that starts it movie for half a second, then tons of little squares appear in the picture and then VLC crashes.

What do you think is the problem? Everything worked before. Is my computer slowing down, is it buggy software or spyware? Granted I have not formatted it in a little while, but I don't see the CPU or processor being used up 100%. I don't know what could be the problem? I have upgraded my graphics card driver. I am now going to try to re install VLC, but I doubt that will fix it. Is there an update? Whats going wrong?

Thanks for your time and help guys, I really appreciate it!

Hello,

Can you try VLC 1.1.0-pre2, please?

Hey J-B!

Thanks for the quick response. I have downloaded the beta and its working better now but not working perfectly. 1 of 3 1080P MKVs plays nearly perfectly, there are some tiny lags and little squaring coming up on the skin. The other 2 have lagging and squaring a bit. A massive improvement though!

The older MKVs seem to be playing fine too. Thanks!

I love VLC!

Ok, that is because your CPU is not fast enough.

If you are on Windows, and nVidia card, please try GPU decoding.

Opps, I forgot to shutdown photoshop, excel etc before trying to run it.

Everything is running fine now. Thanks for your help!

I have seen threads all over the net of people reporting the same problem, I hope they see this thread.

A dual core is not typically considered fast enough to run a 1080p video. if you get any fast frames you run into those blocks because it can't compute fast enough. a quad-core is standard accepted minimum for 1080p.

Any new Dual core CPU with over 2 GHz is just fine for Blu-ray level 1080p material.
