Postby plbowler » 12 Apr 2010 03:39

Howdee ALL,

I am running VLC 1.01 I think, on a WinXP AMD Athlon 64 3200+ machine connected by wireless G

My music is stored on a freeNAS .71 machine dual Athlom MP 2000's hardwired to my network.

I am curious what the best method of playing the music files on the XP macine is?

upnp?
network mapped drives on WinXP?

How do you define the best? Personally I would go with network mapped drives.

well, for starters one that doesn't make a 16 Meg FLAC pause for a full minute twice per song, which is how the current SMB share via Wireless G through WinXP works.

obviously this might have (has) a lot (all) to do with the wireless G, but i've checked the DPC latencey and it is fine (all <500). So with that in mind is there a particular method that is heavy on one resource but light on others?

to my untrained mind there are three players on the game.

the NAS Hardware (dual Athlon MP 2000's) running freeNAS with 512 Megs of RAM (soon to be a full gig, the MoBo is pickier than I anticipated)
the transfer- NAS hardwired via Gigbit port to the uverse mandatory 2Wire 3800 (with NON gigabit ports), then wirlessly to the playing PC:
the player PC which is a Athlon 64 3200+ with 1 Gig of Ram running vlc.

I am likely to just hardwire the thing as that will likely mask any other issues, which works for me, it just seems like this should be doable over Wireless G, I'm not asking for 1080p or anything, just lossless audio.

Have you tried to use Wireshark to see where it hangs?
