Theater mode troubles with WXP

Postby Tensa » 08 Feb 2010 03:52

I am currently using WXP Pro 32bit.

I have used VLC for years now and never had a problem with theater mode. After downloading the latest episode of a series I am watching, the video does not output on my TV. I am connected using a S-Video cable. I can see the video and VLC but it does not go auto-fullscreen. Even when I manually go fullscreen it fudges the resolution. Earlier, I upgraded my VLC from 1.0.1 to 1.0.5. This may be related to the problem, but I can't say for sure.

The video is H.264. This is the only video that will not play in theater mode. I have another series that plays in theater mode just fine. The codecs listed on VLC for other series are xvid/avc1 and they have no problem. I suppose for now I will find an older version of VLC and see if this fixes the problem.

Apparently the old version I had was 1.0.1. I downgraded to that and it is working again. I tried 1.0.3 however that did not work as well. Perhaps this should be looked in to?

I have an AMD Opteron 165 dual core processor, and an ATI Radeon x1800GTO video card with 256mb of ram.

Different video formats shouldn't have any effect to Overlay.

I agree, it shouldn't. However it was not displaying theater mode with h.264 encoding. Don't know what to tell you. The older version works just fine.

Could you open Tools -> Messages... (set Verbosity to 2) before you open the problematic file and paste messages here after open?

Hi!

I have problems with TV and 'theatre mode full screen', too, only it is occasional - some (most) times the mode goes on OK but some times not. then I have to launch the file 2-3 times until it goes to full screen.

this is just in version 1.0.5, not in 0.8.6 witch I've been using until now (I had problems with the video in earlier versions, 0.9 - 1.0.x, kind of 'blurring' the picture....)

some notes more...

I tried to change some video-options, and it helped for a while, but then today again, somehow vlc-player 'messes up' secondary graphics and there is no full screen mode in TV (tried 10 times to start to play the file).
it might have something to do with scaling the vlc-window in desktop (primary screen)...

other players (like mp-classic, windows-mp...), work OK, so something is not right with vlc...
and it would be really nice to get it work, since it is one rare player showing DVB-subtitles.

No need to install. You can just extract 1.0.5 .zip/.7z package to somewhere and run it from there.

so, same problem continues, some files works OK, some not; and 'bad' ones sometimes work after reboot...

- deinterlacing as default is not working anymore, have to choose manually (linear), then working;
- 'monitor 2' (for TV) options in ATI-CCCenter got 'grey'; I've got the feeling that vlc messes the card.... corrects after reboot...

- media player classic works still OK...

here are messages for 2 files not working with TV-theatre-full-mode:

vout_directx warning: DirectDrawUpdateOverlay cannot move/resize overlay
vout_directx error: overlay unuseable (might already be in use)
That is the problem.

yes, that is the problem, vlc 105 has obviously difficulties handling the overlay;

other programs don't have problems since they are working OK with overlay.
and no, there are no other programs using the overlay at the same time, so it is not in use, the only user is vlc itself.

so, back to old 086. pity.

:(
