DVDs don't play anymore

Hello,
since upgrading to 1.0.2 our regular shop-buyed DVDs (muliple) don't play anymore. The DVD starts spinning but stops after a few seconds and the screen stays black with the timeline at ~ 80% fix. (Windows XP SP3).

Previously the DVDs played without any problems. The drive is locked to region code 2 and all DVDs are region code 2.
The DVD is openend via "Open media". With or without menues doesn't matter.

What I discovered is, when an active AnyDVD is running, I at least can run the VOB file itsself. Without it doesn't open.

I also tried downgrading to 0.8.6i as recommended by some other posts here in the forum, but there is also no picture.

Also deleted the .dvdcss and vlc in %appdata%.

Does anyone have an idea?

Does it work better if you open dvd://F:\VIDEO_TS ?

I've just updated the VLC version. Nothing else was changed.

dvd://F:\VIDEO_TS doesn't work either.

Does Media Player Classic Home Cinema play it correctly?

Yes with the "Media Player Classic Home Cinema" all DVDs work fine. That's quite ok, but I'm still wondering why VLC doesn't play them anymore.

Yes I removed the %appdata%\dvdcss folder as recommended from a previous post.

In my case there appears to be a dependency on an external CODEC. Videolan experts will have to answer whether that is expected. Windows Media player told me I needed to install a CODEC. This thread may be different from my problem.

I had exactly this problem until I installed PowerDVD. After installing PowerDVD VideoLan and Windows Media player work as expected on the same DVD.

The original failure I had that has now gone away after installing CyperDVD follows. I don't remember the exact hex address but the -1/4 blocks part was exact.

Playback failure: DVDRead could not read -1/4 blocks at 0xXXX.

If VideoLan is truly dependent on an external CODEC maybe it should output a missing CODEC error message instead of the cannot read -1/4 blocks message.

And DVDRead isn't codec error. It is a DVD reading error.
