passwords etc on vlc1.0.2

Postby just-do-it » 27 Oct 2009 00:20

a while ago now I was having trouble playing http://do-it.no-ip.org/MEDIA/arts/theat ... onplay.m3uin vlc which was resolved by obtaining the, now current, vlc 1.0.2 as seen in this postviewtopic.php?f=14&t=62797.
Unfortunatley, for various reasons, I have now put a password on http://do.-it.no-ip.org/MEDIA/arts/theater/radio/radio4/AfternoonPlay/afternoonplay.m3u.

Windows Media player will open the url once the user and password are provided but vlc1.0.2 will not.
Any idea what I could be doing wrong - I get a username/password dialog box into which I enter

Code: Select all

special
and

Code: Select all

ceragem
and then the dialog clears and another is presented to me - whats up?

Open Tools -> Messages... (set Verbosity to 2) before trying to open the file. Messages should explain what went wrong.

access_http debug: authentication failed for realm just-do-it.no-ip.org
So there is either bug in VLC or in the server setup you use.

whatever the 'bug' is 'windows media player' manages to handle it...
just for fun I experimented with my server (IIS5 runing under w2k advanced server) and instead of a 'virtual directory' which

Code: Select all

http://just-do-it.no-ip.org/MEDIA/arts/theater/radio/radio4/classic_serial/outline.mp3
resides in I tried just a simple directory

Code: Select all

http://just-do-it.no-ip.org/test/penguine_cafe_1.m3u
the user/password I kept as special / ceragem as before and got the same result vis vlc(0.86d and 1.0.2) fails to authenticate the folder but 'dose media player sucseeds without problem.
then I tried real media to the protected directory above and it too failed :(

If any one wants to enlighten me about what, if anything, I am doing wrong then please do.
If any one wants me to set up anything on my server too that is fine - I would like to get vlc authenticating in protected directories.
I appologise in advance for being 'dosey - Why do I hear shouts of "get yourself a real web server (apache)!"? - oh welll
Ahh Go on; Go on

If you know how to use Wireshark, you could compare what WMP and VLC do differently.
