720x576 that turns to 1365x576 instead of 1024x576

Here's a MPEG-2 clip with a video stream size of 720x576, but with a wider Mpeg DAR (Display Aspect Ratio):

PowerDVD reports the file as:

16:9 would turn 720x576 into 1024x576. Alas, VLC turns it to 1365x576 instead, which would make it CinemaScope (2.35:1 which is roughly 1365/576~2.37):

Maybe the video should be remuxed with the correct DAR of 16:9 because I think there is a conflict between the MPEG PS container DAR and the video stream DAR..

Notice that you can change the aspect ratio from the Video menu -> Aspect ratio then select 16:9.

Remuxed how? We're talking about a clip that was ripped as is. If it's ripped as is, why should it be modified?

Yep that's from MediaInfo but you're right some other tools are reporting 16:9 so I'm not sure if MediaInfo is reporting the information from the container or from the video stream.

AviDemux can do that with the Copy Streams feature, you can also try ProjectX (this recent build from Oozoon requires Java 1.6).

The MPEG2 sequence headers are broken:

display width (540) is lower than encoded width (720).

How you got those stats? Well, I've used DVD Decrypter + Mpg2Cut2, but got the same results with DVDShrink.

If VOBs from DVDShrink (full transfer) look the same, then this DVD was incorrectly manufactured.

But it's an almost Oscar nominated film, so it's not exactly an unknown film (not that it promises anything, but still).
