no audio from asf file

Postby vfguy » 24 Sep 2009 17:24

If we play certain asf files, video is fine, audio doesn't play.

found a "work around" by choosing AUDIO, then AUDIO TRACK, then DISABLE; followed by choosing AUDIO, AUDIO TRACK, then TRACK1

I've tried resetting preferences to the deault. No help.

Stream info is:

Stream 0
Type: Audio
Codec: wmas
Channels: 1
Sample rate: 22050 Hz
Bits per sample: 16
Bitrate: 20kb/s

Version 1.0.1

Thanks.

I think WMAS is Windows Media Audio Speech (aka Voice) which is not natively supported by VLC. Thus VLC is trying to use the Windows DMO codecs but unfortunately this feature is a bit broken since v1.0.0.

I've found another workaround which is not working anymore now but yours is working fine :)
Thanks for the tip and let's hope the DMO feature will be repaired soon Image

OK, thanks for the quick reply.

I'll just re-associate ASF files with WMP for the time being.

I've been complaining about this for a while too. This bug must not be very high on the priority list sigh.

You are correct. Nobody is interested on WMV/WMA stuff.

Haha I ... KNEW it

Truth be told, I just haven't seen others complained about this same issue. There are other things that are problematic with the DMO, but appeared unrelated in this layman's eyes.

This is actually the first time I saw someone recommending this same method to get around the problem.

Well, this is a very annoying bug, but noone seems to have understood what triggers it.

On a sidenote the same issue happens to me using VLC 1.0.2 with ANY file containing Windows Media Audio, even with WMA2 which is natively supported by VLC.

I have to use Audio menu trick to be able to hear the sound in all cases.

Thought I'd post a "me too" for v1.0.2 streaming an .asf file. v1.0.1 worked fine for me. And the trick of disable / track1 toggle doesn't fix it in v1.0.2 for me at all. I went back to v1.0.1 for now - let me know if you need somethign tested.

I've posted this as a reply to someone else's post here in this same forum: viewtopic.php?f=14&t=66201#p220571

Quick and dirty here though, every WMA file I've created through ripping a track from an audio CD (and, obviously, output selected as WMA) WORKS in VLC, no bandaid required. These are wma2, which someone already mentioned IS supported. I don't have any wma2 codec files that don't work (yet).
However, other WMA files don't see to, one such one being wmap, and the audio track disable/track1 trick does NOT work for this, at least not under 1.0.2.

More descriptive information in the linked post, including file information from VLC itself.
