hotkeys prefs problems

Postby cybmole » 16 Sep 2009 08:10

two issues
1. I can go to hotkeys - preferences and enter+save the media keys on my keyboard for play, stop mute etc. I see them in prefs OK but when I test vlc with a file they are not working, in either window or full screen - what have I missed ? - or are these keys not supported
e.g. I have this table entry
action ..........hotkey ..............global
play/pause .....media play pause ..unset

2. on the hotkeys-prefs I see tthree columns - action - hotkey-global . In GLOBAL, all the entries are UNSET - I don't see how to edit this ??

1. You restarted VLC after changes?
2. It isn't easy via GUI. Hopefully it gets fixed in next release.

OK yes - I reset all preferences than set media hotkeys, saved ,restarted, googled, searched the forum.... seems that current version cannot be made to work with media keys.

I even found a free app that claimed to make things work with vlc0.86 but no luck with that either

googled global hotkeys but did not find anything useful.

You can manually edit %appdata%\vlc\vlcrc with text editor and uncomment global-* options and assign keys to them.

thanks - I did not know that, but vlcrc is pretty unreadable in notepad - what text editor do you suggest ?

thanks it IS readable in wordpad.

so what is the difference between setting a global hoteky & a regular one - let's say I make ENTER the regular hotkey for play/pause but make SPACE the global one - what have I then done & has it affected anything other than VLC ?

Normal hotkeys only react when focus is on VLC itself. Global ones should work when VLC doesn't have focus (like when you play World of Warcraft).
