Screen Scrambles when I Go to Play a DVD from the Drive

Postby dstewart1 » 07 Sep 2009 05:10

When I open the DVD from the drive everything scrambles. I have the latest version of VLC. The screen shows multi colours and the sound scrambles too. Any other file is fine, only DVD's from the drive. Can anyone help with this. Is it a DVD region thing?

Thanks

Do you open the movie via Media -> Open Disc... ? And does removing of %appdata%\vlc folder help?

Thanks for your reply. Yes I open the movie via media. Where is the option to remove %appdata%\vlc folder?

I've been having this problem recently when playing region 2 disks in my region 1 player, which is really annoying as it has only recently developed. I have the newest upgrade of VLC and don't want to automatically assume there is a problem with the upgrade, but there might be with the multi region dvd playback part of the program. I have been able to play the movies after using a program that rips them to my hard drive and removes the region coding. This however is impractical and just further makes me think there is some problem with the multi region part of the new VLC. Any help would be appreciated.

Also, I have no clue what the removing %appdata%\vlc folder means or how to do it.

Just type %appdata%\vlc to Windows Explorer or to start -> run, it will lead to right place.

I removed the app data folder but the problem persists. All that seemed to do was bring back the window from when I first installed this version asking if I wanted vlc to get album artwork from the internet.

Just to test a hunch I downgraded to version 0.85 and can now play out of region disks again. I find it weird going back to the old interface but will gladly do that to be able to watch my media again. I don't know how to suggest this formally but perhaps someone should look at changes in the region decoding made from .85 to the current version and see what could be causing this problem.

Version 0.96 also works without any of the problems, and has pretty much the same interface as the current version..

I have got the same problem while playing foreign dvd in my region 1 drive (T42 lenovo system) with version vlc 1.0.1. I got stuttering, color blocks, scrambles, dvd is unplayable. Regular region1 dvd are plying fine.

I have downgraded all version 0.9x, they all have the same problem

I have found version 0.8.6 was playing foreign dvd correctly. After checking the configuration, i have seen that this version was playing dvd with a cache disable (version 1.0.1 use 300 msec cache by default).

So i reinstalled version 1.0.1 and in the dvd disc menu, click more option and set cache to 0 instead of 300msec. Voila, now foreigh dvd are playing correctly in this version too!!!

Enjoy!

I had the same problem reading a region 2 dvd today -- it worked fine until now... Strangely, each file starts to read correctly at about 80% of the total lenght, both for the menu and the movie proper.

I updated to version 1.0.2, set cache to 0 instead of 300msec and it didn't change anything. Any suggestion? Going back to an earlier version?

** edit : downloaded version 0.8.6, works fine! this is weird, though **

I was having a similar problem. When I would open up a dvd to play through media the disc would start playing, get past the FBI warning and then freeze up on a black screen.
I tried removing the %appdata%/vlc folder to no avail but when I changed the cache to 0ms I was able to play the dvd. This made it skip alot though so I started incrementing the cache first to 100ms which worked, then back to 300, then 301 both failed, then bumped it to 400 and it plays fine now.
