Hello and thanks for the reply, as I was becoming a little worried! :)

When I press "check for updates," it prompts me for the location of the download. Then, it says: "Failed to open 'download location' for writing," where "download location" is for example C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\My Documents\Downloads or whatever the default is.

The strange thing is I think the issue arose as a conflict between VLC and something else, but weirdly for the first time talked about since the v1.0.0 release.

cheers,
twipley

I also can´t help me with the same problem, using the v1.0.0 release with vista, German version.

Yeah I had this issue as well but I think I know how to bypass it.

Go here http://www.videolan.org/

Apparently that website (that I found randomly) also provides the download, who would of thunk it.

Hope this has helped.

The point is the internal update feature of VLC is broken for some.

I have seen the same issue with VLC1.0.0. Update from within VLC may be broken, but at least it says that a new version is available :)
Instead downloading and runing the setup of VLC1.0.1 I saw another problem when the previous version is uninstalled through the setup process (upgrade process). If I select not to remove the VLC preferences/configuration at uninstall the Setup exits with an error (something about configuring plugins) just after the uninstall of VLC1.0.0 has ended. It works to start setup again and do a normal install, so not a blocking problem.
