File conversion and Screencasting

I work as a Graphic Designer in a TV station and we are just in the process of installing new computers across the department with fresh Windows installations and I'm trying to convince everyone that VLC is what we need instead of all the media players and media tools we have , Besided needing to play almost obscure media formats sometimes and properiotary codecs and formats sometimes , we constantly have the need to convert one vido from one format to another and we also constantly find ourselves in a situation where we need to do a Screencast of some sort ... I just learned that VLC can do them both using the STraming option and the Convert/save option , Only I don't know how to use them , can anyone help me out on this ??

Media -> Convert/Save if you want to convert media file to another format.

Media -> Streaming... if you want to stream the desktop to another computer (select Capture device and Desktop from there and after that, select proper streaming options).

Yeah ... I know how to get there but I don't know how to capture , I mean There are no record buttons or save buttons for the desktop capture
As for teh Conversion the files always get changed to a .ps) format whatever that is no matter what codecs I use and what seddings I use

If you want to capture to file, then you use Media -> Convert/Save.

And you have to enter the file extension manually. VLC doesn't do that.

i have the same problem.

i want to use VLC to play 4 high quality avi files, one after the other, and capture them into a single compressed file.

so far i have tried loading a couple into: Media > Streaming > Add (file selection) > Stream

and then used these options: Destinations > Add > c:\blah.flv

i believe i chose the correct transcoding options also, so the output would match the file extension.

heres the string;

thanks for trying to help but i'm not sure how to alter the code i have, assuming it is at all correct for the operration i want performed. why didn't VLC generate the filenames (plural!) that were needed when the wizard accepted multi 'add' file choices?

ok. i have no idea what any of this means really. all i can see is 'sout' means output of some kind, there is the transcode details that are passed to vlc for the conversion and the obvious path and file names. everything else is a blur of syntax i don't understand.

You should prolly specify width and height options also, if they aren't same on all files you are going to play.

i tried the above and and the output file wasn't created nor was the second video played. i left the "c:\vlc\vlc" out of the final because i was in the stream wizard. should i have done that? does c:\vlc\vlc represent vlc.exe's path in the example?

Open Tools -> Messages... (set Verbosity to 2) before trying the streaming. It should give complains which you can paste here.

thank you. i was previously trying using AVIs and was getting errors there too, i don't know what they contained though. i'll make sure i have the right candidates for next time.
