VLC HD Playback

Postby djtoodles » 26 Jul 2009 23:33

I have a Core 2 duo T9300 (2.5ghz) 3 gigs of ram and a nvidia 8600GT vid card and it seems any HD movie studders the playback. THe audio is fine but the video sucks. Anyone have any ideas how to fix this? I am running latest version of VLC and vista home premium.

If you are watching H.264 stuff, try loop filter trick

You could try increasing the file cache:

hmm neither option seemed to make it run flawless. better but still not flawless. and inside win7 my ratings are
cpu: 6.0
ram: 6.0
graphics: 5.7
gaming graphics: 6.1

there really should be no lag. This is frusterating. Any other ideas on what it could be?

also just thinking is there a way i can download another codec which will play HD h.264 files since the curent codec for vlc seems to be lacking and not able to use multi core? and if so is do i just drop it in a certain folder and replace a file?

No you cannot do that. Only other alternative might be compiling with FFmpeg-mt, however from what I understand that doesn't work very well with VLC. CoreAVC (a proprietary DirectShow codec) might perform better, as might a FFmpeg-mt build of MPlayer (see here), however both of those don't involve using VLC.

VLC cannot use external codecs. So if loop filter trick doesn't help enough, there isn't anything you can do than wait for new VLC that has better libavcodec H.264 decoder.
