Change standard icon for files

Postby Crigou » 25 Jul 2009 03:17

Greetings,

are there something like icon-packs for changing the standard icon for files (avi/mpg/...) from vlc?
Or any other way to do this fast without having to click through the windows extensions options dozens of times?

Thanks

File type-specific icons haven't been added (yet) to VLC. Currently just the cone. There are icons/icons packs about though. Have a look at the QT4 Consolidation Thread:
viewtopic.php?f=7&t=35494&p=193559#p193559

^ From that post onward it is all about icons pretty much. lopoz posted some OS X ones here, and vlc_fan-01 posted some other ones (*.png and *.ico files) there.

Arite.

Thank you.
One question - do I have to switch all the icons manually, or can this be done automatically?

You can write a script that overwrites registry values (if you want different icon for different file types) or you can replace the default VLC icon (in case you want same icon for all files).

Ok, I feel like a idiot for asking, but I'm new at dealing with changing the icon styles on programs - HOW do you change the default icon for VLC? I've came across several others that look good, but have absolutely no idea how to change 'em. Help?

There are vlc.exe and vlc.ico files in VLC installation folder. Change them. You need a resource editor tool or VLC compilechain if you want to edit vlc.exe icon.
One tool for the job is http://icofx.ro/help/overview.html

You cannot, AFAIK.
