Direct3d Output? WHY!?!

Postby Black Sheep » 07 Apr 2009 21:43

Okay, I updated VLC ( Wish I didn't )
Now .mkv's takes longer to open and I don't have an interface at the bottom where I could change the volume and change where I am in the video

How do I fix this?

(Already reset all configurations )

After I updated from 9.9 to 1.0(on windows 7 build 7100), I had the same problem when I opened videos with double click, it opened them with direct3d and had no GUI.

Then I tried opening an audio file, and there was no window at all, but the music was still playing. So I opened the task manager and right clicked VLC in the applications tab and clicked "bring to front", and there was a message about privacy or something and I clicked ok before reading it. After that the VLC window shows up and behaves as normal, I then open a video and it works fine with a full GUI.

I have the same issue.

I just updated, and if I start VLC by itself, it works fine.

But if I launch VLC by double-clicking on the video file (mp4 in this case), I get a clean window with NO CONTROLS. And no way to bring them back. Ctrl-H doesn't work.

I'm running on Vista 32-bit if that matters.

It's very annoying and frustrating. Many of the hot keys work, but I really want the full control set available so I can access them with mouse or trackpad... and I want this by default. I can't seem to figure out how to get controls when launching media. I have to instead go to Start menu, run VLC, then select File Open, and then browse to the media file. What a pain.

bobnine.... that's very odd. I did the same thing and noticed the "privacy and networking" things too for the first time. Once I dismissed those, it started working again.

VERY WEIRD.

my .avi files also only open in direct3d output when double-clicked, leaving me with no gui. only checked with .avi files, any way to disable this? it's pretty annoying having to open vlc, open file..find file..and so on.

Hi, er I've just been prompted to update today and now i've got this problem too. It says hardware YUV overlay DirectX output, but has the same result as people have mentioned here, not sure what to do about it. I've tried the suggestions given already but nothing works.

If opening via Media -> Open file... doesn't give the issue, then it must be that something is wrong with VLC file associations. Could someone having the issue copy reg key from one of the associated tile type that can be found from shell\Open\command and paste it here?

OK then, solved the problem. I was having a vlc zombie process, thus the interface settings weren't being applied. just killing the process solve the problem.
I'd suggest you guys review the setup procedure, checking for vlc processes before upgrading

this works. just did it.
make sure to end the vlc.exe process before (re)install, now it works fine.

Ok the info on this thread was mostly correct, though for me everything had to be done in a specific order.

That privacy thing was what I needed to click OK on, but I could not see it until I did the following:

First close VLC
Open up task manager (shift+esc) and kill any VLC.exe processes that are running
Uninstall VLC using the Uninstall.exe in the VLC folder
Check task manager again to make sure no VLC.exe processes are running, under the processes tab look for VLC.exe
Now install VLC from http://www.videolan.org/vlc/

I had these exact problems. Here's how I fixed it:
1. Download the latest VLC package
2. When asked, remove previous version
3. Select to remove all user settings
4. Launch VLC using the shortcut on the desktop NOT by a video file

Files will now open properly.
