Decreasing quality of H.264 stream

Postby Guppy49 » 14 Jul 2009 22:02

With 0.9.8a and since a while also with the night builds of 1.0.0 I had a reasonable quality watching the following stream:
rtsp://streamer-01.dr.nordija.dk:80/dr1high
But now the quality is so poor that it is not worth watching news or films from this stream.

I have tried modifying options in Other codecs, FFMPG and different options in Video of the VLC settings, but nothing seems to solve the problem.
Here is a screenshot of the codecs etc. Would the high frame rate be a problem?

Any hints appreciated as well as your experience watching this stream.

Edit: when viewing the stream in mp4 format it seems slightly better: rtsp://streamer-01.dr.nordija.dk:80/dr1highmp4

You also get errors like that to VLC message log (Tools -> Messages... and set Verbosity to 2) with the first stream?

Yes, I do get such messages and much more with verbosity set to 2. Even with verbosity set to 1 there is a bunch of messages.
I prefer link to the log files in order not to fill the message dialog with too many lines. I can't interpret the messages, but it seems sound is a problem too - unless the sound is affected because of a video issue.
Verbosité = 2: http://dl.free.fr/myRewDEp9
Verbosité = 1: http://dl.free.fr/rBmjgFyZ2

The first links I gave are supposed to be with a bit rate of 1000 kbs.
There is a link supposed to be with 300 kbs - rtsp://streamer-01.dr.nordija.dk/dr1low
With this link the video quality of course is not as good, but it seems to be less disturbed than the higher bit rate.

I tested with VLC 0.9.6 and I get same errors/warnings. Is there some version that used to work without issues?

Well, with 0.9.8a things worked well (but no longer the case). Unfortunately I don't know if the sender changed something since then. The first versions of releases of 1.0.0 didn't work at all but then started working a while ago (I made a post at that time). But now the quality is simply too poor.
I could try to write to dr.dk but I'm afraid they'll end by blocking foreign IP addresses ;-) Not enough that I have a passport from that country.
They have a beta site for the stream testing, but it hasn't been "active" for long time, so I guess they have stopped testing:
