DVD Playback Problems

Hi,

I want to play some DVD's using VideoLAN to avoid the region protection on my DVD ROM. I have one more change left. The problem is that I'm having issues viewing DVD's with VLC. I've tried numerous DVD's and get the following problem shown in the image:



Sometimes the DVD menu is fine, but then once it goes to the actual video, that happens. The audio also skips. I've tried all the different video output settings and the same problem still occurs. Does anyone know how to fix this? I'm running the latest version and using Windows Vista.

Yeah, you probably have a hardware-locked Drive.

If you copy the disc content to hard drive, you can play it back without issues? Does Media Player Classic play the disc correctly?

I thought VLC bypasses the region locking.

Do mean ripping the DVD? I would rather just be able to use the disc. And I tried downloading Media Player Classic from download.com, but McAfee detected it as a trojan.

You should download Media Player Classic from sourceforge.

Wrong region code shouldn't cause errors like that. Bad CSS decryption might cause problems like that.

Whilst trying to open a DVD that is a different region to what is currently set, Media Player Classic says 'Copy-protect fail' at the bottom and wont open the DVD.

Try opening a DVD with no menus (dvdsimple://). Also does the issue occur with all DVDs regardless of the region?

Well it does seem it has something to do with the region protection, because all the discs I tried that are the region my drive is set on worked fine. Which I find strange, because I thought VLC was suppose to bypass it as I said earlier. It now frustrates me that I have one change left and can't find any other programs that will get around it.

With trying the no menu's idea, I got the following message:

VLC is unable to open the MRL 'dvdsimple://E:\'. Check the log for details.

DVDfab decrypter and AnyDVD are tools that can always go around region code if that is the issue. You can also flash your DVD drive firmware to make the drive region free. And dvdsimple is broken in 0.9.8a

This is my post here at the forum. Please be kind.

I'm not very tech savy, but here's the problem. I've used VLC media players for years on PCs and on laptops and ALWAYS been able to play a DVD (PAL or NSTC) from any region without difficulties. I just bought a Sony VAIO notebook with Vista software. It also has an Intervideo WIN-DVD & Blu-ray player. I've downloaded the VLC 9.8 media player (also tried 9.6) and get the same break-up with Region 2 DVDs when the menu appears and upon playback of the DVD that Chistos is experiencing. (see Christos' image above in the first post of this thread). This is very frustrating.

Any suggestions?

Well as previously discussed in the topic it may be that your drive is hardware-locked.

What are VLC's messages when you playback a DVD? Go to "Tools >> Messages...", set the "Verbosity Level" to 2, and then open a DVD-Video. Copy and paste the messages here (post the messages in "Code" BBCode tags preferably).

I was having the exact same problem as the OP. I have windows XP and a region 1 DVD drive; VLC media player would play region 1 DVDs fine, but not region 2 (video output was as in the OP).

I was using version 0.9.8a of the VLC media player. I unistalled that and installed version 0.8.6i of the VLC media player - and now all DVDs I've tried have played fine (region 1, region 2, all-regions PAL; all legal DVDs), no adjustments needed, and no changing my drive region!

I had the same problem, DVDs from other regions would not play properly (frozen distorted image and interrupted sound). With version 0.8.6i they work perfectly. I have Vista, so this version seems to work well both for Vista and XP. My DVD is RPC-2, and I'm glad I didn't have to go through the uncertain process of flashing my dvd-drive or downloading one of those dvd-region-killer programs that seem to come with malware.

Do you guys think there is a bug in the latest vlc version (related to playing other region dvds) and that we should report this to the vlc developers?

Thank you Jae, I had the same problem as everyone else, region 1 DVD drive and region 2 DVD that played with the same blocky image and cliping audio. I even tried copying the Video_TS file to my hard drive which didn't help at all, and I have a cheap TSST drive so I couldn't flash it if I wanted to. So far Version 8.61i works great.
