I reinstalled xp and vlc and it opens on these file extensions, but I hear nothing. Yes speakers are on. Yes VLC does play audio and video files on my HDD.

Could you open Tools -> Messages... (set Verbosity to 2) before starting playback and play some file for few seconds and then press pause and paste messages here?
