Postby leftkidney » 05 Feb 2009 12:18

If you sound card is setup to output 6 channels/5.1 it should do that automatically. If you only have stereo then it will default to Stereo (which is in effect the same as 5.1 surround sound would get downmixed anyway).

actually i got stereo speakers and when i change the audio device in VLC to 5.1 it gives a totally different audio one that includes all the other sounds but in a crowded sense because there is only two speakers so it feels like there is no focus in the audio, everything is loud. is that normal?

The Windows Mixer will down-mix to stereo differently to how VLC does it so it will be slightly different.

there is a problem i think with the VLC mixer, mpc mixer is better and has more control. but VLC mutes the hell out of a audio. i think u guys need to look into this.

yea set up for 7.1 also

it dont matter - I can set it to 5.1 or 2 channel and it always is the same default in VLC

every single time the audio changes on a movie (like when you go to the menu on a dvd and it changes from AC3 5.1 to PCM or something like that) I have to reset this option - every single episode of a TV show on DVD I watch I have to reset the audio device to 5.1 even if I havent closed the player

I am using 0.9.6 since 0.9.8 has that problem with dual monitors and I dont feel like messing with it - I can get it to work but I like it the way it was before

Could you check from Tools -> Messages... (set Verbosity to 2) what does it print on aout_directx debug: Windows says your SpeakerConfig is when you open those files?

Re: default audio device

Postby leftkidney » 08 Feb 2009 00:54

it says this

aout_directx debug: OpenAudio
aout_directx debug: found device: Primary Sound Driver
aout_directx debug: found device: Realtek Digital Output (Realtek High Definition Audio)
aout_directx debug: found device: Speakers (Realtek High Definition Audio)
aout_directx debug: device supports 5.1 channels
aout_directx debug: device supports 4 channels
aout_directx debug: device supports 2 channels
aout_directx debug: device supports 1 channel
aout_directx debug: device supports A/52 over S/PDIF
aout_directx debug: creating DirectSoundThread

is this enough info

also A/52 over S/PDIF makes the audio play 3 times in a loop so it says "I I I dont dont dont get get get it it it" in stead of "I dont get it" - so I dont get it whats up with that

S/PDIF works better with Waveout audio output module. So you don't get line aout_directx debug: Windows says your SpeakerConfig is at all?

Thanks, I try to fix this today.
EDIT:
Could you test this build I made? It has both speaker override feature and also addition of another 7.1 setup detection. (I don't have 7.1 device or speakers for testing)

also this isnt a problem but it is a fixed window at what looks like 2.35:1 or so but the video aspect is correct

You set the 5.1 on from Tools -> Preferences... (Show settings: All) Audio -> Output modules -> DirectX ?

so I think the problem happens because after I change it to 5.1 and then I go to the menu of a DVD it is only 2 channel so it resets to that since there isnt a 5.1 track - but when there is one it dont go to that it stays on 2 channel - so maybe it has to be told to look for 5.1 tracks and if it is there then to switch the audio device to 5.1

You have to restart VLC after change of that option. And least on my computer it works on DVD where audio changes from stereo to 5.1

dont work for me

let me go over my workflow

put DVD in (Alias Season 2 Disc 3, not that it matters)

right click on drive icon and choose "Play with VLC" - it plays

the menu is only 2 channel so thats all I can pick in the options other than mono and A/52 over S/PDIF which dont work at all

I start an episode and it is in 5.1 sound so I change the audio device to 5.1 and it sounds great

episode ends and DVD goes back to menu and audio device gets reset to 2 channel

I play the next episode and I again have to change the audio device to 5.1

if I open the preferences up and check it it is on DirectX and while it is still playing the 5.1 thing I press SAVE and then close the whole player and re-open it again

if I play the DVD again it is back to 2 channel even though there is a 5.1 track

so its not like the player is selecting the 2 channel track, it is playing the 5.1 track since it is the #1 track on the DVD but it is down mixing it to 2 channel because for what ever reason the player/windows is reporting that is all it can do or something like that

I have gotten into the mode if changing it every time I start a episode so its not that big of a deal, but it shouldnt be that way

maybe I am doing something wrong so let me know - thanks for the help

You have to set the 5.1 from Tools -> Preferences... (Show settings: All) Audio -> Output modules -> DirectX (there is Speaker setup option) and Save+restart VLC after that.

OK it works now with the build that you provided - but not with the 0.9.6 (0.9.8 does wierd things when using 2 displays, its not the same as it was in 0.9.6 but it works - I just dont like it so I use 0.9.6) I didnt see the speaker setup at first but I do now, if this were in 0.9.6 thats all I would need - can that be done?

a couple of problems with the build that you provided

the window is in what looks like 2.35:1 or close to that, not 1.78:1 (16x9) but the aspect of the video is correct it just has black bars on the sides unless I go full screen (which dont behave like it does in 0.9.6 it is like 0.9.8) but it is not on the correct display then and I assume the same fixes for 0.9.8 work in this build you provided but I havent tried them yet - another problem is when playing DVD there is no button to go to the DVD menu, I am sure this is in options maybe or maybe not

so YES it works with the build you provided - so maybe it will make it into the 1.0 final build (I see it is still at 0.9.8a) when I set up things for my parents its not good to have things change, it makes it harder for them so now I dont have to tell them to right click and so forth to get it correct (I have had them using XBMC but it is confusing to them so if this is working correctly then it isnt going to be a problem)

Speaker setup is new option, I added it to 1.0.0 so you won't get it to 0.9.x series. And I those 1.0.0 test builds have some issues. And in 1.0.0 you can add DVD menu buttons to GUI via View -> Customize interface.

awesome thanks for the help

so is the dual screen thingie going to be like it is in 0.9.6 so that no matter what display it is on when you go full screen it stays on that display and dont move the controls over to the other display but rather have that pop-up bar that has buttons on it - you know what I mean it is like that on 0.9.6 - or like it is now where you have to make changes to the settings for it to work like in the latest builds

Some people have reported that the dual monitor full screen is broken in 1.0.0 also, but I don't know for sure because I only have one monitor.

what would be best is if it works just like it does in 0.9.6 - or maybe have an option to allow that

something was changed in 0.9.8 - it worked fine before so change it back
