ranlib File format not recognized

Hi all,

i am trying to build vlc-0.9.8a on windows using cygwin (recently installed) and following this guide http://wiki.videolan.org/Win32CompileCygwinNew

When i try to execute this:

tar xf contrib-20080702-win32-bin-gcc-4.2.1-sjlj-runtime-3.13-only.tar.bz2 -C /
ranlib /usr/win32/lib/lib*.a

i get following error

ranlib: /usr/win32/lib/libBasicUsageEnvironment.a: File format not recognized

i tried extracting winrar, 7zip also. but same result. And it is coming for every file. Can anyone help me with this? I tried searching on forum and didn't found any solution.

I think in the vlc-devel mailing list jb had posted just a few days ago, a virtual machines which you could use it to build vlc, which you can find in the ML archive by goggle good luck.

i found that post but the size is too large for me to download. i would like to setup my own build environment on the system.

ranlib is optional. I haven't ever done that.
