There was fix on nightly about the manifest file which should fix Visual C++ runtime error (at least I assume so).

I tried the following nightlies but none of them would run at all:

0.9.8-20081206-0217
0.9.9-20081209-0205
0.9.9-20081210-0204

Can you recommend a "known good" build?

The error message (when just running VLC Player normally) was:

C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC\vlc.exe
This application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem.

I reinstalled 0.9.6 again and it's running fine (except of course for the plugin issue).

ETA: I noticed as well that the current stable is 0.9.8a, which installs and runs fine, however also still has the plugin issue. Perhaps the .exe installer for the nightlies does not work properly and requires additional packaging before release?

Remove the vlc.exe.manifest if you get the application configuration is incorrect error.

Thanks for following this up, Mr. Cone-huna. :-)

I reinstalled 0.9.9-20081210-0204 and removed vlc.exe.manifest - VLC now runs fine standalone.

No difference when viewing videos in FF 3 though. Should I try any of the 1.0.0 builds or are they a different story altogether?

You need to remove npvlc.dll.manifest if you get the C++ crash in browser.

Isn't it fixed with 0.9.8a?
I have heard that 0.9.8a was more stable about web plugins point of view.

You need to remove npvlc.dll.manifest if you get the C++ crash in browser.
I have removed it from Firefox and VLC directory but the error message comes again. The funniest think is that the video is playing very fine when the error occure. Example http://mediathek.zdf.de

Then it is a bug. I was assuming you get that error every time that VLC plugin get initialized in your browser.

It seems like there are subtle differences between the symptoms on different systems. peter123 said that his browser crashes... when I first encountered this problem I remember the browser crashing in at least one version of VLC, however with the current versions, like Larix, I get the C++ error, and then the video seems to play fine. I'm currently using FF3.0.4 and VLC 0.9.9 nightly 20081210-0204, with vlc.exe.manifest and npvlc.dll.manifest removed.

I tried to capture the behaviour using CamStudio to give you an idea... note however that while the video plays successfully you can't see it in this footage because CamStudio doesn't capture DirectX video output, but I assure the video was playing. :-)

problem is manifest file issue. There have been some fixes in 1.0.0 but I am not sure if they fix this (I don't use Firefox or VLC plugin).

When anybody can say which 1.0.0 trunk Build is "stable" I can test if it's fixed in it. :)

Removing "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\plugins\Microsoft.VC80.CRT" and contents fixes the problem for me too, thanks for the pointer VLC_help!

I had a brief dig through the registry and FireFox config but couldn't see any references that would indicate where it came from and why...

Perhaps it will help you. Thank you.
