Reinstalling VLC Under Windows 98

Postby Mainframe » 09 Dec 2008 15:45

For the past 9 months I have been using VLC 0.8.6e under Windows 98 with no problem. :D

But, due to other matters I was forced to delete it till I got that problem resloved.

However, when I went to reinstall it, I got a pop up saying that VLC was for only Windows 2000/XP and that Unicows.dll was required.

I knew about the Unicows.dll requirement and did delete/reinstall them to the Windows/System directory. Yet VLC still gives me the Only for Windows 2000/xp pop-up. :?

How can I get VLC to run under Windows 98 again?

Thanks for any help.

You can't run 0.9.x or newer on Windows 98. You can run 0.8.6i on Windows 98.

Sorry to point this out, but, if you read my post, I am NOT installing VLC 0.9x under Windows 98

I am trying to reinstall VLC 0.8.6e under Windows 98!

So, if I have the correct version, and I have Unicows.dll (1.1.3790) and Unicows.pdb installed in my windows\system directory why do I keep getting this warning evertime I try to open it: :(

wxWidgets Fatal Error
This program uses Unicode and requires Windows NT/2000/XP
Program aborted

This is a bug fixed in the 0.8.6i version (I use it with no trouble on my old pc with W98SE) ;)

THanks, but, as I was googleing for an answer I remember the orginal method that I used when I first installed VLC back in March 08.

Just replace the libwxwidgets_plugin.dll from VLC 0.8.06e with the one from VLC 08.06C in the VLC\plugins directory

BTW - I may, when I have the time, download version 0.8.06i

0.8.xx "worked" on Windoze 98 but not very well. MPLAYER is much better. VLC 0.9xx break compatibility without compensation and don't bring any new features. Maybe 1.0 will habe Dirac support. Maybe I'll test with the famous ME/98 kernel crack pack then  But for now, there is no benefit of VLC
