0.9.6 artifacts with DVD files

Postby qpskfec » 01 Dec 2008 19:23

I just got a new laptop w/Vista SP1 and loaded 0.9.6 to play DVDs and vobs clips from DVDs. (from commercial DVDs, full D1 MPEG2, AC3)

Intel T3200 dual core, 2GB, no other apps running when using VLC, so plenty of cpu amd memory available.

I noticed some jagged edge motion artifacts when playing some files. For example, if there is a person on the screen that is moving, there are horizontal lines at the transition to the backround. I tried changing some of video settings from "deinterlace" to "blend", "mean", etc. Some of the settings improved the artifacts, byt they were still there to varying degrees. I am playing these on the laptop screen. Same artifacts whether the video is in a small window or full screen. A few files also stutter while playing.

I renamed the vobs to mpg and opened in WMP11. (WMP11 can't open a DVD folder) I didn't see the same artifacts - the transitions were very smooth compared to VLC. In general the video performance was much better in WMP11. ( I also opened the mpg with VLC, no difference from playing the DVD folder)

I also played the same files in an XP SP2 system using WinDVD and Sonic Cineplayer, it looked about the same as in WMP11 - no artifacts.

Is this a VLC install or codec issue? Any way to improve this?

Can VLC snapshot feature capture these artifacts? VLC doesn't use Directshow or VfW codecs, so issue isn't codec related.

yes the artifacts are visible in the png screen capture, there are less artifacts in the capture when using other viodeo settings like "blend"

I also downloaded the latest version of media player classic and opened the same clip - it did not show the artifacts

Does it help if you use No menus option in VLC when you open the DVD disc?

It doesn't help. The problem is you can see the artifacts when the dvd and vlc is open and/or play the dvd. I want post a screesnhot but you can't see them when vlc is not playing. crazy.

Feature called Overlay video output causes that you cannot take screenshot from video surface. Does the file play OK, if you rip it to hard drive and do playback from there? If not, could you share short sample file that shows the issue?

I'll try to post a picture of the artifacts that I see tonight.

They are very similar to the artifacts that I see on my HDTV(720p) when I am watching a 480i SD channel and the upconversion to 720p isn't done well.

For example, if I go back and forth between the Fox Sports SD and HD channels for a basketball game, the out of bounds lines on the SD channel have a stair step pattern. On the HD channel, the lines look fine.

I had the same problem but with Media Player Classic, new ThinPad X200 laptop with Vista. Frame transitions were visible as horizontal lines somewhere in the upper portion of the display.

Switching output from WMR9 to Ovelay Mixer solved the problem.
