...
kinemax: there isn't any official builds between 0.8.6i and 0.9.2
The release I had the problem with is 0.9.6. I tried 0.9.2 and (for the basic features I need) so far so good.

0.9.x blows.
0.9.x is definitly a mess ...
I disagree strongly with this sentiment

VLC is a wonderful program.
I am extremely grateful for the ongoing development. New versions are coming out all the time and are clearly moving in the right direction.
And all this is before giving any consideration to value for money.

Seriously the only people in any position to complain are those offering their services but finding it appears to not be appreciated. mikaelz & yapaksa wake up. If you think you can do better then start doing it.

On another topic. Why the monster thread?
I thought there was a preference for one thread per issue. I can see value in the developers listing outstanding issue so they don't have to repeat themselves. If that is what this thread is suppose to achieve perhaps a new one should be created for each version and locked so only developers can post in it. On the other hand if developers like it this way then disregard this post.

I need to clean it up.
But I am going to kill this thread and put a Admin-Only thread where I will post the only KNOWN and DEVELOPPED issues.

powerbird101: you open .bin files only, or .bin+.cue combos?

wks: filenames are Cyrillic or the ID3 metadata?

Re: Issues with current Release on Windows: .vlc extension

Postby anoopkn » 16 Nov 2008 15:14

0.9.4 and 0.9.6 versions are not playing flash video files with .vlc extension, but are playing with when they are given .flv extension.
It was working fine with 0.8 series. Please have a look at this matter and solve it in the next release. One thing that I loved about vlc player was its ability to play videos irrespective of the extensions they had.

They are both. I attached tested mp3 (http://www.mediafire.com/?001dyzm2mfm) and UI screenshot (http://www.mediafire.com/?jz0nzjhy3mu)
If i use the russian in vlc UI - result is the same.

To VLC_help:

Thx for your attention about the problem I'm facing.

Sorry about the missing information.

I think I may have solved the problem, as I reinstall the VLC in full version.

I am using VLC 0.9.6 Grishenko on Win XP Home SP3 with all updates installed. I have a 64X2 Athlon CPU with 4 Gigs of DDR2 800 MHz RAM. VLC is set to be associated with all of the video codecs in the installer but none of the Audio ones. I also have the K Lite Mega Codec Pack installed.

I tried to play an .flv file last night and I hadn't done that for a while and I am not sure if the last time was before I last updated VLC. The player launched and then just sat there. If I try again with the player launched it always crashed giving the following error every time I tried to launch any .flv file:
VLC media player has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience,
When I look up the details it gives me this:
AppName: VLC.exe AppVer: 0.9.6.99 ModName: msvrt.dll ModVer: 7.0.26005512 Offset: 00036fa3
Now today I tried to launch several H.264 files with the .mp4 I downloaded from Revision 3 and they also didn't work. Upon trying to launch them with the player already open the error I got this time was:
VLC can't recognize the input's format:
The format of 'M:\Media\Video\Podcasts\Rev3's Tekzilla\Tekzilla--0059--dellalienpc--hd.h264.mp4' cannot be detected. Have a look the log for details.
When I looked at the log there is some weird thing about the system clock counting backwards.

I have tried a overwrite install for a repair, an install with preferences deleted, one with an uninstall and reinstall with preferences deleted, and finally a clean reinstall (uninstall VLC, delete the folder in program files, Restart the computer, reinstall VLC with delete preferences checked) and the problem still occurs.

These same files play in every one of my other media players that can handle directshow codecs (Media Player Classic, Windows Media Player, and even Media Player 2) Which leads me to believe that this is an issue with VLC's dedicated codecs.

I realized that I forgot to read through the last posts on the forum looking for answers because I was so irked by not being able to work this one out. When I looked I found the fix for the .flv problem as previously posted... You might want to get in touch with the good people over at VersionTracker because they did not get the word about the fix and you released it with the same version number and they have no build numbers listed I think they didn't get the message, or linked to the wrong version because I downloaded my current version from the last update they had shown in their daily mailing of new updates, and VLC hasn't appeared in there since.

I don't know if this build will also fix the .mp4 problem, but I will let you know.

Sorry, but the only version you can trust is the version on our main page, not on one of our FTP, not on any other Website... The fact that they distribute wrong versions of VLC is their problem, not ours. We cannot go on the thousands of website that are too greedy and tell them they have a wrong binary.
Just don't mirror the binary, just take the link to our server.

anoopkn: thanks for spotting that.

(but you should keep FLV as .flv)

wks: thanks, I can confirm this. Meta data is mishmash on every player, but VLC doesn't handle the filename correctly.

NP. Possibly i have one more issue for your "bug paradise"

Steps to reproduce:
1. make folder -> [C:\tmp\Линда - Беги]
2. copy in folder [02. цепи и кольца.mp3] (i placed 4 copies of this mp3)
3. VLC UI -> Media -> Open Folder -> show [C:\tmp\Линда - Беги]
4. VLC will stuck

*tested on both wxp sp2 rus /eng

Version: 0.9.6
OS: Windows XP SP2 (32-bit)
Interface: skins2 (default.vlt and others with embedded video window)

When started with an AVI file command line argument VLC doesn't start playing and doesn't fill status variables for title and time labels either.

On program exit (clicking 'close' button in righttop corner) while playing video there are various reactions. First the video window gets extracted from player and appears as a separate video window for a short moment, and then happens one of these:
- VLC.EXE process hangs, can be ended by system tray menu 'Close'.
- VLC.EXE process hangs rendering system tray unusable. System tray events are memorized and played back in a quick sequence after manually ending the non-responsive VLC.EXE process in Task Manager (sometimes invoking Task Manager with Ctrl+Alt+Del is enough in itself).
- crash in libvout_directx_plugin.dll

Exiting by keypress (Ctrl+Q) is much safer.

System tray notification area icon is always displayed (this may be by design in skin2 mode), and it remains there even after a trouble-free and complete program exit, disappears only by hovering.

Switching back from full screen video by keypress 'F' is also problematic, keys don't work anymore, apparently the focus goes a wrong place. I have to click other application (or Win desktop) and VLC panel again to reanimate keyboard events.

And here's how to reproduce a bug mentioned by lestbest on page 10 of this topic:
- change skin to default.vlt (save settings, restart)
- start playing a video
- click 'Switch to Minimal Mode', video window is extracted now
- press key 'F' twice (one for full screen, then one for switching back)

Now the separated video window has got its frame back but its size is still almost full screen. And if possible, it would be nice to re-embed video (without having to close video window and restart playback) when switching back to Full Mode.

I am a newbie to VLC, but not to computers (have been playing with them since 1953). I have been running VLC on 3 of my Fedora hosts for some time. I really like it. I am evaluating VLC as a replacement for WinDvd 8 on my HT/PC and have encountered some difficulties - a step in migrating from XP-SP3 to Fedora and in migrating to Blu-ray capable sometime in the future. Perhaps my expectations are incorrect.
---
Failing test - Playing "Lord of the Rings" (extended - the 12 DVD edition), Audio track #2 (DTS). Audio drops out after a few seconds.
- WinDvd 8 has no problems - at least, not in this regard :-)
- DD-EX surround (audio track #1) works correctly.
- decoder / DAC - Creative Audigy2-zs Platinum
the output of the Audigy is up-mixed 7.1 analog - unbalanced, 3 and 4 pole 3.5mm jacks, and base management (redirection) is enabled (128 Hz).
---
Why the Audigy and not a receiver?
The sound system (100% professional analog) is made up of recycled and rebuilt parts collected over the years, many from theater refurbishments.
- breakout cables - 3.5mm plugs to professional 1/4" TR phono plugs.
- 8 channels of U/B conversion - 1/4" TR to XLR +4dBu referenced analog (ground lifted). The two rear channels are mixed down to a single rear channel.
- the center, side, and rear XLR cables run (up to 12 m) to active studio reference monitors (mid-field calibrated).
- the LFE goes to a bridged servo 550w amp, to an EV TL3512 theatrical grade, THX certified, sub-woofer (2nd order Chebychev passband, for those who care :-).
- the front (mains) go to a stack management processor (Samson-Hartke), then amplifiers (8), then to Altec VoTT A-10 theatrical, mono pole, speaker stacks (Cinerama).
- - The loudspeaker system is both ITU surround and THX Surround EX 6.1 compliant.
- - The system has 17 amplifier (25w to 550w) / transducer pairs, and is THX calibrated to the auditorium.
- - crossovers are active Linkwitz-Riley 24 dB / octave - frequency, delay (phasing), and shelving adjustable.
---
If DTS capability requires an external decoder then I cannot use VLC as a replacement for WInDvd. I have yet to find an adequate and affordable external decoder. Consumer gear uses -10 dBv line levels and will require many line level amplifiers to reach +4 dBu (~ 2v RMS) which is the Audigy reference level. FYI - to archive the 100dB+ S/N ratio, touted by Creative, the host requires an isolated ground and the U/B must provide ground lift.

Is this using VLC 0.9.6 on Windows XP?

VLC supports DTS decoding natively. The DTS track on the LOTR Extened Editions is DTS-ES 6.1 Discrete. Of that, only the main DTS "core" part can be decoded since the ES extensions are not supported (yet). That means that the standard DTS Coherant Acoutics 5.1 should be decodable without a problem (for the extra discrete rear channel a currently commercial decoder would be required). I am able to decode it using VLC 0.9.6 (through Wine).

The DTS messages output:

Code: Select all

dts info: DTS channels:6 samplerate:48000 bitrate:768000
Are you trying to pipe the DTS through S/PDIF, or just playback the decoded LPCM audio?

Arite.

j-b, I think there is a misunderstanding. For one VersionTracker is a free service that has been promoting and putting VLC in its editors top picks for overall software for years now. Secondly it didn't host the file it sent me to one of your sites to download it. This is the same site I downloaded my copy of 9.6 from:

http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-windows.html

I was pointing out that they might not have had put out a notice for the latest builds update (a very uncommon thing on their part) possibly because of how build numbers on VLC are not disclosed in the end product (not that you have to). I also understand you can't contact or have a relationship with every Tom, Dick, or Harry that distributes your files, but I thought that a major distributor of Freeware like CNet (which owns sites with big positive reputations like Download.com and VersionTracker). They last announced the update on the 12 of November( actually the wee hours of the 11 here) which is when i installed the out of date version I got from your site. Is it possible I got it before you updated that sites link?

Still I am not a member of your project and if you choose not to deal with any outside distributors that is your projects prerogative. I will go to the information page for VLC and leave a comment in case anybody is having the same problems as I did.

Thank You guys for your hard work, and especially in this day and age where so many freeware projects are going to a closed for pay model, I am glad that you guys and gals are keeping it free.

That means VLC has crashed. If VLC closes down properly, there won't be any system tray icons left.

Hi Dear Support Team,

I'm very pleased to use VLC media player. It is very comfortable and easy to use player. Buttttttt a little problem still appears after new releases. this problem is dealing with Equalizer. i have a playlist and each time when a new track plays I need turn on "Enable" check. Consider, if I have 50-60 tracks i want to listen:)))))... i need to click it each time.

Can you please correct this option, i.e. make a change to save settings...

Many thanks in advance.

The meta data is saved against the specs.

Hi,
I am having a problem with streaming on the version 0.9.6, I cannot stream some mp3 files continuously to another computer.
1. My system: Window Vista Home Premium, SP1
2. Details of my problems:
a. I want to play music at the same time between my computer and my friend's computer.
b. I choose Streaming from File menu.
c. I select multiple mp3 files, than click Stream.
d. I choose RTP (and also tried UDP), type the IP address, choose profile mp3, check "keep output stream open".
e. HOWEVER, there's only one file streamed. The playlist also content one item "Streaming" only.
f. If I want to stream another file, I need to repeat the whole process, and my friend need to restart his VLC.
Please let me know the solution? I post this problem here because it doesn't occur with the older version 0.86

Thanks
