playing WAV files

Postby leearnold » 12 Jun 2008 15:01

I recently upgraded from an older version of VLC to the newest one. Now the player won't play WAV audio files. Have I done something wrong? Is there a way to correct this?

Some WAV files won't play. First thing I suggest is to try resetting VLC settings. If that doesn't work, open View -> Messages before opening problematic files and paste info here (or if you can give samples it is better).

I had a similar problem playing a WAV file I received from an Asterix PBX (a VoIP server). I tracked the file in Messages and here's the output.

VLC 0.8.6i

If anyone knows why I'm kind of curious. I love VLC by the way, is is my first problem with it ever!

fourcc: undf means that VLC doesn't identify the audio. You might want to try nightlies, to see if they work any better.

ftp://ftp.videolan.org/incoming/
and report back the filenames (please upload file and same named text file that explains the issue)

or use rapidshare or megaupload if you don't use ftp.

I posted a sample that won't play via the ftp site. The file name is msg0002.wav, and the text file is msg0002.txt. Your help is greatly appreciated.

This is another type of WAV file VLC can't play, the RingCentral (http://www.ringcentral.com) voice messages. I have uploaded a sample:

http://rapidshare.com/files/161349045/aa.wav.html

Maybe you can take a look and why not, fix the bug / add the feature.

Seeing the same problem here with Phonepower.com's VOIP service.

Audio files will play with WMP, but I get the errors:
wav error: unsupported codec (undf)
avformat error: av_open_input_stream failed

I'm using VLC 0.9.8a on WinXP if that matters.

Any fixes on the way for this? It's so disappointing to see WMP tolerate the problem while VLC just up and quits. I had always experienced much more fault-tolerance with VLC in the past... particularly with partial files in P2P downloads.

I haven't seen any patches related to these on mailing list, but you can try 1.0.0 builds to see if something has changed.
http://nightlies.videolan.org/build/win32/?C=M;O=D (trunks are 1.0.0)

They aren't plain WAV (PCM) files. You can use codecs inside WAV files and that is why all WAV files won't play in VLC.

Agreed - I can now see that Phonepower's audio is "MS GSM 6.10, Mono, 8.000kHz" according to the info panel in Quicktime (nice to see that WMP doesn't give this information... morons).

So annoying that they call it a WAV when it's not. Morons #2...

Still, it would be nice to be able to play this from VLC... I mean, if QT and WMP can play it with no issues...

Problem isn't WMP. Problem is that you don't have required codecs installed.

VLC doesn't use DirectShow codecs. So keep hoping that FFmpeg devs implement GSM decoding.

Actually, it is a problem in WMP... it plays the sound (hence the codec is installed) but it doesn't identify it. QT plays it AND identifies it properly. Hence, my statement is correct.

Understood... so be it.

WMP should display the info if the codecs provide it (also Windows Explorer should do it also).

You are correct - WMP should show it... but it doesn't.

Your example of explorer showing it is spot-on... it does... but as I said before, WMP does not:

I have embedded VLC in a VB 2005 program. On my desktop, I can play .wav files in VLC. But within my VB 2005 program, VLC will not play .wav files (although the embedded VLC does play .mp3 and ALAC files).

How can I get the embedded VLC to play .wav files, as it can on the desktop?
