Not sure what you are trying to say. I've tried with both vlc-0.9.4-win32.7z and vlc-0.9.4-win32.zip.You mean associations set by installer or associations set by VLCs Association setup dialog?
You don't need to use the installer when using the zip and 7zip version. It works without installing VLC. I use XP Pro SP3.So you aren't using installer, so it cannot be installer issue. Are you running Vista?
Why did the file associations work fine with VLC 8.6i without having to do that? The installer script writes appropriate entries in the Registry for file associations and context menus. The non-installer file archives don't, hence why the file associations don't work.
Try installing VLC using the installer version into the directory you wish to install it to (or, once installed, you should just be able to delete the installed version folder if you like and continue using the extracted version). Restart your PC if they still don't work/icons aren't right and associations should work correctly.
Cheers, Arite.
