Yep, same thing here, crashes even before the interface appears.

skins2 works OK in here. Does resetting VLC settings help?

Yes, it's able to start after a complete reset or setting the skin to Qt, but won't start at all when set to skinnable. Don't even have time to choose a skin, crash on startup.

You can select skin file you want to use from QT4 preferences. Does it work any better if you enable skins interface from QT4 GUI? (I assume you enable it using some other way)

No, if i select a skin from the preference the player doesn't crash right away but the skin doesn't show up, and then the player crash on restart so I have to reset it.
I tried reinstalling, no cigar. I tried removing all the skin but one in the skin folder, still no cigar.
System spec(if it helps any):

Gigabyte GA-EP35-DS3P
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600
OCZ Platinum XTC REV.2 PC2-6400 2GB
Corsair CMPSU-620HX 620W
Power color Radeon HD4850
Audiophile 2496
Edirol FA-101
Win XP home sp3, up to date.

I am having exactly the same problem. Just updated my version of VLC from 8.6 to the latest 9.4. I decided I'd like a nice skin for it, but when trying to set main interface to skinnable it crashes. I too have to reset settings to get it working again. If I just put the skin in the skins folder and try to open it through VLC nothing happens. I am also on XP SP3.

One other thing - on a couple of occasions of trying to start VLC after loading a skin my firewall reported that VLC was trying to access / open system32/dwwin.exe. If I allow it, it will just crash, and if I deny it, VLC will not open.

Can't currently get any skins! Help!

dwwin.exe is Microsoft Doctor Watson error reporting tool, so VLC has already crashed, if it tries to activate it.

Does your Skin file location in preferences point to ***\vlc\skins\default.vlt?

Same problem here: selected a skin file, nothing happened so closed program and reopened. crash.

Currently I wear XP SP3 on an Intel based PC.

Hint: To reset the program to default settings delete all files in C:\Documents and Settings\(Username)\Application Data\vlc

bullshark answered all the questions as I would so wont add anything else.

another option is to go that folder open the file named vlcrc find the key intf set it equal to qt4 the next key should be extraintf
make sure its commented out by adding a # before if it.

Code: Select all

# string (Interface module) intf=qt4 # string (Extra interface modules) #extraintf=

Just thought i would give my 2 Cents, same thing happens here, as well as the others with this problem, i too am running WinXP SP3. So, i guess we can kind of say it seems to be related with SP3

Also, you can simply disable the skinable interface and return to the QT interface by going to:
Start>>All Programs>>VideoLAN>>Quick Settings>>Interface>>Set Main Interface to Qt (default)

When looking in preferences there is nothing in the box for skin file location. Though if trying to change it from there, I did put the skin in that folder and browse to it through preferences, but it doesn't change.

Appears to be a bug with XP SP3 though, as others have pointed out.

I found it. Default skin is broken. Replace the skins\default.vlt with some other skin and it should work.

Didn't work for me unfortunately. Replaced with another skin but still crashes! Anyone else tried it?

Didn't crash with a skin called "electrix" when it was renamed to "default" to replace the default skin(program still crashed when trying to load the skin with conventional method), but program was slow and not very responsive although the skin showed up, then I tried Win VLC 11 and it crashed with that one.

If you start VLC from command line, try with

Code: Select all

vlc -I skins2 --verbose 2 --extraintf=logger
it should create log which might tell where the problem is.

EDIT:
If you know skins that won't work, then tell which ones won't work so I can check them out.

Yeah, I too was using Win VLC 11 and it crashed. I didn't try any others.

Do you mean to place that text string in command prompt?

I also tried to replace the default.vlt skin with something else, didn't work for me. Also may be useful to know that im still running SP2 because SP3 is screwing with some of my programs. If anyone can help thatd be great. Thanks in advance =D

It seems that this is issue with libpng that doesn't handle transparent pixels properly. So skins that use transparency, won't prolly work at all. So only workaround is to skins that don't use transparency.
