.m2t files look scary after upgrading to 0.9.2

hey Folks!

I've used Vlc for a loong time and was thrilled about the new version - until i've opened my canon xh a1 HDV .m2t files - they look strange. like its being rendered at a lower resolutiond than being upscaled with nearest neighbour 'algorythm'.

Is there a fix for this behaviour?

I am using Windows Vista Ultimate 64bit, 4GB Ram, 8800GTS

edit: when taking a snapshot the .png is fine. During playback not only the video looks scrambeld, also the overlays like the pause icon or the path that's being displayed while the playback starts look wired in the same way

sure, but this won't change a thing.

vlc starts with 100% size, scaling it bigger makes it worse, scaling it smaller makes it less noticeable, yet there

well the thing is: screenshots look fine i've just took a few with fraps. the thing i notice: instead of generating a 1920x1080 image I only get a 1440x1080 image. this is the regular HDV resolution that's getting stretched to 1920x1080 during playback. and there seems to be the error. VLC somehow just stretches it instead of generating a usable image. when using the vlc snapshot function i get a error free 1920x1080 image, a fraps screenshot gives me a correct 1440x1080 image, only the playback is off

Have you tried to force the zoom to 1:1?

i have - it is already set to 1:1, so no change there. i am on a 1920x1200 tft

well sure, but this is nothing file specific. happens with all my m2t hdv footage - over 100 hours of material from various cameras and timespans

ok i've finally found something useful: it only happens with files that have a built in aspect ratio (like HDV files). Happened with a .wmv as well - the wmv has a native resolution of 720x576 which is being stretched to 16:9 aspect. same with DVD mpeg2 files that have 720x576 (PAL) and are in 16:9

Have you tried different video output module (Save and restart VLC after change)? Because video works fine in here.

No problem so far for me with anamorphic videos, doesn't matter the format neither the container.
Your sample is playing fine on my system so does any DVD I've tried.

Maybe you are using a custom screen resolution which is not the native resolution of your TFT-LCD monitor ?
Or maybe you have changed some of the window settings in the Preferences ?
Try to use the native resolution of your monitor and to reset the VLC preferences.

thanks for all the ideas but really there's nothing that is set wrong or something. my monitor is set to the correct native resolution, switching from 'default' to 'directx 3d' doesnt change anything. I have just installed an older version of vlc, 0.8.4a to be exact, and the problem is gone.

the problem is more than just noticeable so you should have defineately seen it. i've even tried on my winXP machine and my vista powered laptop - all three of my pcs behave in the same way with the 0.9.2 release

lol ok at least i am not the only one^^ this is somewhat anoying - how am i supposed to check my HD material if vlc won't display it right? i've always used this player to get a 'real' output instead of the stuff scaling and colorgrading players like power-dvd give.

any ideas what could be done about this?

I saw a thread here, but this thread is more recent...

We just got FiOS and one of our cable boxes, moto something or other, has firewire. I'm on OS X, so installed the latest FirewireSDK. The AVCVideoCap.app recognizes the device, and captures in .m2t files. Just to test, I captured 2 files of a minute each using CSI:Miami as a guinea pig. But vlc will not recognize the file, says "no suitable codec" -- but everywhere I've looked vlc is the only app that can handle these files.

Any ideas? Is this some new DRMed .m2t file that vlc won't read?

Yeah, posted in the windows section-- but doubtful this is an OS specific issue, and no one ever seems to look at the OS X posts. Your tolerance is appreciated.

I am experienced with the same issue. I tried recording (insert major show title here) on (insert one of the big four networks here) and they have encryption on some of the shows. You just can't get around it at this time. I would put money on it that if you recorded CSI:Miami from the A&E network (I think that's what it's on), you would get this .m2t file to work. Avoid the big four networks when using firewire. When they eat the popsicles, they swallow the stick with it. If you catch my drift. Hope this helps.
