Windows bar when trying to go fullscreen

Postby xxx » 16 Dec 2007 00:05

Hi Guys,

I wonder if you can help. I have vlc 0.86d and almost everything is fine but the problem I'm having is that when I try to go fullscreen, it doesn't completely go full screen - the windows bar at the bottom still remains.

Below is a sample screenshot of what I mean. I also also tried uninstalling/reinstalling 0.86c as well but same results. I am also using Vista Home Premium.

Has anyone come across this before and if so how can i fix it please?

Try clearing your preferences and cache by going to:
C:\Documents and Settings\(Your username)\Application Data

And deleting the "vlc" folder.

Thanks for the suggestiion but I'm afraid that didn't work.. I am using Vista so there is no C:\Documents and Settings\(Your username)\Application Data but i deleted the vlc folder from App Data\Roaming directory.

Does this happen with all video output modules?

Hi,
It happens to all output modules except Directx Video output where i am able to go fullscreen without the bottom bar, but in this mode the fonts go really small and the picture is cut so only like a quarter of the picture is shown and the rest is black. I also wasn't able to take a printscreen of this as whenever i tried to save the the image, it corresponded with what was going on in vlc player i.e. if i closed vlc then the saved image would be blank!?

Try the option "Always on top" (Preferences -> Video -> Always on top) and see if this continues. I guess something else you could do is to right-click on the task bar, go to Properties and check the box "Auto-hide the task bar" but I not sure if this is really a good solution. :)

Even then fullscreen should work, VLC will take priority over the Windows task bar even if the task bar is set to be on top of other windows.

The always on top suggestion din't work. Vlc thinks it's fullscreen but isn't.

The auto hide task bar would have been ok but it leaves a white line at the bottom of the screen....

Any more ideas of what could be the cause?

It seems to be a global issue with Windows Vista, DirectX and Aero, not just VLC. One method which should get rid of the taskbar (although not solve the problem) is disabling Aero/selecting a different Vista theme. You could also update you video card the the latest ones (if they are not already up to date).

Another thing which may work (in VLC) would be to change the Video output module to OpenGL (you can also take screenshots in OpenGL with the video - does not work with DirectX).

Cheers, Arite.

Ahh, I missed that part on you using Vista. Well then this most likely is a Vista problem, just search the forums and you'll see. :P

Cheers guys, just to let you know that it was a Vista problem and in particular the Aero. Not sure if WMP and Media Player Classic use Directx but they work fine even when using Aero...

Hey guys,

I'm new to these forums and joined because I have the same issue reported in this thread. I've tried everything suggested but nothing remedies the issue. My OS is Vista Ultimate 64.

Any more ideas on how to fix this?

You can try to fiddle with Overlay video output to see if it helps.

Do all that have these issues have two VLC programs running (first is VLC media Player and second is VLC (Direct3D output)?

This is strange, I got that same problem but with Media Player Classic, so I don't think it's a VLC problem.

Were you also using Vista with Aero? One thing you could try would be to update your Graphics drivers to the latest version (If you have an NVIDIA GPU then ForceWare 169 came out a few days ago).

Cheers, Arite.

w@ntonsoup: you only get this problem with VLC? And you don't have any taskbar tools installed? And same happens with nightlies?

Same problem in with nightlies... It's really a bone-stock Vista Premium computer, about a month old. This stinks.

Any combination of Lock the taskbar, Auto-hide the taskbar or Keep the taskbar on top of other windows help?

Nothing works - and it's ONLY vlc doing this. Windows Media Player works fine in full screen, and so does every other program / video player.

I see that other people have had this problem too. :(
