Visualizations Crash VLC

Postby sour_beans » 06 Aug 2008 18:39

Hi, I have a problem with VLC media player. Every time I enable a visualization, VLC freezes. It doesn't exactly chew up 100% of the CPU, but I can't click, or do anything inside the player. I'm forced to use Task Manager to kill the "vlc.exe" process. This is with every visualization I try to select, and even before and after I open a file.

Does anyone know why VLC freezes, and how I can fix it?

I'm also using the WMP11 skin, if that makes any difference.

Does this happen if you use another GUI? (not Skins)

No, after I switch to the default interface, the visualizations work fine. So I guess it's only with skins? But how can I make visuals work with skins? I kind of liked the WMP11 look, because that's what I'm used to.

Okay, here's something. I used the default interface to open the visualizations, then switched to the skinned interface. Now, everything seems to work fine, and the visualizations appear in the WMP11 interface.

I'll report back if any other problems arise. Thanks for your help :) !

Okay, it seems that visualizations work fine except in one case: every time I switch to the "compact mode" (or "minimal mode"), and then switch back to the full mode, visualizations freeze VLC once again. Even if I restart VLC, visualizations will still freeze it, and I'm forced to switch back to the default interface, enable visualizations, and then switch to my skinned interface.

I'm not sure if this is a bug or not. I don't try to enable visualizations during compact mode (that's pointless), but even if I return out of compact mode, they freeze VLC.

If you can crash or freeze VLC, it is a bug.

VLC Bug Report?

Postby sour_beans » 08 Aug 2008 19:40

Okay, so now what? Is there a place for me to report this bug... or what do I do next to (hopefully) resolved in the next version.

http://trac.videolan.org/vlc/
you must register and validate your account before you can report bugs. Currently it seems skins2 doesn't work with nightlies so it might impossible to do nightlies bug report. (0.8.6 won't prolly get any more patches)

What I did to ameliorate this for now was turn the priority on the process down to low. You can do this from the CTRL-ALT-DELTE menu under the processes tab. Otherwise I was getting a similar result causing everything to freeze to ultra slow.
