unable to play avi file with vlc media player

so here is the problem
downloaded a avi file of the net and tried to play it with vlc media player 0.8.6i, but it gave me a broken avi file error (and played only 3 min. of the total video)
downlaoded the file again same error, some one suggested me to use km player to play it, and i was able to play the file with km player correctly without any errors.
i downlaoded the avi from a different source ( and diff. file size and probably codec too) and it now played with vlc media player correctly..
