file plays with VLC but cannot burn

Postby gibsongk55 » 16 Jun 2008 04:24

Hi Everyone,

Hoping someone has a solution. I have some movies that are avi format. I managed to convert 2 of them with Super to vcd format and then burn them no problem. However i have 2 movies that are avi's and i converted them with Super and the converted file shows an extension of .avi.mpg which i am confused. The file before and after the convert will play on VLC but i get an error "invalid file format" when i try to burn via Power2Go. I also downloaded DivXrepair and it only said bad frame and then nothing. But all files play. Is there anything i can do or will VLC someone convert it or burn it?

Thanks,

Gibs

File extensions don't mean anything. Use tool called mediainfo to figure out what the specs of media files really are. VLC can't burn DVD or CD. VLC can convert or transcode but for example AVIdemux might be easier option for -> VCD conversion.

converted file shows an extension of .avi.mpg
Complete name : C:\temp\video-1.avi
Are you sure you opened the converted file? It seems that you opened the original one.

Hi Again,

Yes i am positive that was the converted file as I converted it and split it into two files to fit on 2 VCD's. Here is the info I just ran with the original avi before converting.

woops. wrong one.

Its still an AVI with Xvid video and MP3 audio.
Specify MPEG2 as the video and MP2 as the audio while transcoding.

As for conversion to VCD, try and see if your player supports Xvid/Divx. Most modern ones do, and you can avoid conversion and the resultant loss in quality that way.

VLC player plays the file fine. But i want to burn it to vcd. Not watch it on computer. I am using Power2Go to burn and it will not recognize the file type.

I will check the Super conversion program again and try as you mentioned.

Thanks,

Gibs

Hi Again,

Okay i converted it again with Super using "AutoMode" Preset profile to Autoencode into VCD (NTSC). Finally i was able to split and burn it to VCD. wow i thought this is great. Now i took the other video and tried the same thing. Which takes like 2 hours or more to convert it. Nope the other avi file won't work. It plays with VLC before and after the convert/split. But when trying to burn I get "Invalid format". And again it rewrites the avi file as avi.avi this time. Any suggestions. Here is the file info on the original file. Are there any other free programs to convert besides Super? I also downloaed AviMedic and it found no errors on the file.

Thanks,

Gibs

AVIdemux. File -> Open the video file, then Auto -> VCD and File -> Save -> Save video...

ROFL... why don't you use VLC itself for transcoding ? File>>Wizard>>Transcode/save-to-file then select MPEG2 as video, select arbitary bitrate, select MP2 as audio and output container as MPEG :D

Thanks for the help. I was able to do what you said using VLC. Though i have another movie now that it wouldn't work with VLC. The convert chopped it from 800 Meg to 146 meg. No video nothing. But was able to convert with Super. Unbelievable so many problems with video files. Thanks again for the help.

VCD is MPEG-1, not MPEG-2.
