Multimedia keys in VLC

I recently got a new laptop, and it came with a remote that was mapped to the media keys on the actual keyboard. The problem is, when I map a command to a media button, two things happen: (a) I replace the old binding, which I still want to use, and (b) the command will only work in fullscreen mode.

Is there any way to have two keys bound to one command and have the command work outside fullscreen mode when bound to a media key?
