Problem streaming current audio

Hi People...

I had a bright idea the other day, but either it can't be done, or more likely, I don't know as much as I though I did...

Basically I'm trying to get VLC to multicast to my network the audio that is currently being played by windows...

i.e:

I use a particular program to manage and play my mp3s. I use it particularly as I like in a shared house, and it's database allows for files stored on anyone's PC in my house.

I had the thought when I was playing music in my lounge, and I went upstairs to my PC...

I tried to get VLC to stream the music (presumably coming out of my default directsound device), to a multicast address (I used 224.0.0.2). Then whilst I was upstairs, I ran VLC on my PC, and opened up the stream.

Unfortunately, the VLC receiving the stream, is silent, and no timers are moving (although they do flicker now and again)...

I have streamed using VLC before, but only streaming actual files, not input from a device...

Is this possible?
If so, how please?

If you have what-u-hear or stereo-mix input in your soundcard mixer, you can stream everything you hear from your PC with VLC.

I do indeed have what-u-hear.. I tried that, and wave. but it didn't work.

If you could give me the steps you have in mind I'll give it a go.

I've just had a though, that it may be using my other sounds card that doesn't have those options, but I don't seem to have a choice of sound card, just Auto, or None...

I'm also thinking that it would use my windows default device, which would be the one I'm listening to... I'll check it out tomorrow, but the steps would still be much appreciated..

Start -> run -> sndvol32 /r
and make sure what-u-hear or stereo-mix is selected as recording device. (in Vista start -> run doesn't work so Control panel -> Sound and Recoding tab, Stereo Mix might be hidden on default)

Then open VLC and File -> Open capture device... and from Audio device name locate either your soundcard (non HD audio devices) or input (Vista), if the device or input doesn't show up, press Refresh list once. Then tick Save/Stream and choose your settings.

Ok....

So I did all that. I didn't think about the stream/save option.

I do not have a Stereo-mix or what-u-hear option as such, but I have wave/MP3, which I selected.

I select RTP as the output, but there are no options - whereas before I always streamed to a 224.0.0.x address, then everyone tuned into that.

what RTP address would it be outputting to if I don't specify one, or am I barking up the wrong tree again?
