Streaming with VLC unstable PLEASE HELP!

Postby joncar » 03 May 2008 00:53

Hi, I run a website that streams live video chats every week to our members. Our webmaster set it up using Video Lan player to Broadcast with SSH Client. I am not the most tech savvy in the world but i was running this without a problem for awhile. Now, all of the sudden, the stream wont stay up for more than a minute. I have tried adjusting the output stream from 512 b/s on down with no difference, and even with no viewers in the rom its not stable. I host the site with using a VPS from Hostforweb.com . Any help would be much appreciated. I would even be willing to pay for proper troubleshooting.
This is what the ssh client reads:

This program uses RSA BSAFE® Crypto-C by RSA Security Inc.

Have you tried resetting VLC settings? Or tried newer version?

I've tried resetting all settings and using nightly builds.

Someone make VLC skip over non-working frames! PLEASE!

I absolutely love VLC. it has made my life more exciting..

However, there are a few issues.. and they seem related..

first, the system time appears to have an effect between systems.. if the clocks are not closely timed, they will not stay in sync. This can be fixed using:
net time /set /yes

Once this is set, they should all be in time... however, the next problem is based on the system.. If the system has 1 processor, and VLC loses time, it doesn't keep track of how much time is lost, and starts "glitching" the audio.. This doesn't seem to happen much on dual-processor systems. It also doesn't seem to matter how fast the system is...

I can run it about 8 hours straight before it fails completely, and this has been related to the bad internet connection we have.. The odd thing is that when the incoming stream fails, the outgoing one shuts down also..
Basically, I absolutely love a radio station I found, and use VLC to listen, but since I have it going on mutiple computers, I stream it from a music server, then to the others, cutting bandwidth, and allowing others to enjoy the same music. (not from my server.. just leaving openings for others to enjoy on their own.)

after about 4 hours, I start getting glitches in the audio, then within the next 4, it stops completely... After finding the cable company's lovely method of joining cables using a glorified paper clip, I cut and fixed the wire correctly, but it seems I still have another issue down the line.. go figure...

I don't seem to have these issues at another location, since the bandwidth is constant...

As for a fix.. I think the cache may need to be shared between server/client VNC systems.. This way if timing fails, it can still keep up.. or if the server fails to receive, it merely sends blank audio to the client, keeping the connection... or better yet, an error correction and restreaming capability.. using XML lists with replay don't seem to work....

Any thoughts on other fixes? Is there a better method to stream from VLC to VLC (app to App..)

using \\system:1234. Probably should be using UDP, but it was the only way I could get it to work..

Also, can we stream the XML text somehow?

Lemme know.. (hope this wasn't too long.) JM

Another interesting effect is the difference in failures from Windows 2000 Pro to XP Pro...

Under 2000, it fails more readily than under XP, possibly because of the time-slice system.. Under XP, all apps are more likely to get a timeslice regularly than under 2000 where a process can lock out ALL other routines until it recovers... I get the same glitches under XP Pro SP3, but it takes it much longer to fail...

Curious..

I'd use the UPD, but I think because I am using a switch, that won't work... I'm going to rearrange our network as soon as we rearrange some equipment..

Hubs/switch shouldn't affect to IP network. Routers do. As long as those computers are on same subnet, UDP should work.
