vlc jumpy, WMP isn't

Any audio I play on vlc is jumpy, almost as if it is a scratched cd, but all the time. I tried playing wma, mp3, mp4, wmv, wav, and avi files all with jumpy audio. I cleared the preferences and cache, reinstalled, updated to the newest version, nothing. It worked fine this morning, I have not knowingly removed any essential codecs or components. windows media player works fine, but I can't multitask with WMP. I'm not sure, but I may have accidentally deleted a codec, but not knowing what to replace, I really can't do anything yet.

Does changing audio output module help at all?

I tried each one, I don't think there was any difference. It was set at default, so I put it back once I was done.

Try deleting the preferences and cache fully by going to:
Start >> Run...

And entering "%APPDATA%". Then delete the "vlc" folder.

If that doesn't make any difference try selecting the "Win32 waveOut extension output" Audio module in VLC, restart VLC, then try an audio file.

It definitely helped, but it is still skipping a bit for the first 3-6 seconds, also not as bad as it was before. Unfortunately, it doesn't explain why it suddenly stopped working, I didn't alter any settings and I don't remember updating anything related to directx or other audio.

You could also try raising the file caching value. Go to:
Settings >> Preferences... >> Input / Codecs >> Access modules >> File

And tick the "Advanced options" tickbox. Raise the "Caching value in ms" to e.g. "1000", press "Save" and restart VLC. Then try a file.
