Problem with directx video output, bad quality

Postby paul_ » 09 Feb 2008 05:37

Hi, I hoped for some help with a problem i have.
When i use the directx video output the quality of dvds and other video files is white and perhaps blured, on OpenGL video output it is okay but i want to know the reason because i hate things not to be working as intended.

I use windows xp, 8800gtx graphics card with all latest drivers for all, as well as media players.
I am sure other peoples video files don't play like this with the same settings.

I also had the same problem when i tried on winamp untill i clicking off "allow hardware video overlay"

on the default settings:

This is what it looks like when i changed output module to openGl:

many thanks

You restarted VLC after you changed the setting?

Does it help if you disable Use hardware YUV -> RGB conversion from DirectX output module?

Check in your Graphic Card Driver configuration if there is anything like "Enable Video Hardware Acceleration".
Optional: If you can find some Video settings within the Driver (like... Saturation etc), try to turn off "use application settings"

Hi and thank you both for help.
Does it help if you disable Use hardware YUV -> RGB conversion from DirectX output module?
I'm afraid I didn't understand how to do this, most likely i've tried though, been changing settings around for hours trying to fix this.

This was interesting, i turned the slider down to "Disable all DirectDraw and direct3D accelerations"
It did get back most the color when i used directx video output but it was still far from how it should be, the pixels seemed out of place(i could see peoples heads had squares around instead of rounded) and colors weren't quite right, also tried hardware acceleration on and off in vlc options which had no difference.

I am not so bothered to fix it as opengl seems fine for it just more to find out the reason why, i have a expensive computer and any fault annoys me, also i want to make a movie with fraps on a game but it comes out really blurred and i believe this problem maybe related .

How it looks in game:

So got any ideas about what and why could be causing this?

Your helps much appreciated, Paul.

Hmm, puzzling.

What OS/DirectX Version/VLC Version are you using?

BTW, you can check if Overlay works by enabling "Use Wallpaper Mode" in DirectX Output Settings. Make sure you have your desktop wallpaper disabled while testing that. This only works with overlay enabled.

Try to use a nightly from http://nightlies.videolan.org
Beware that these are unstable builds and the current ones will immediatley error out. Delete libfreetype_plugin.dll from the plugins directory or replace it with this one: http://molkemon.funpic.de/libfreetype_plugin.rar

I play on 1680x1050 and record on half-size.
When i record on full size the raw file isn't blurred but plays back laggy jumps sometimes as much as 5 seconds ahead etc, when i render with windows movie edit, magix movie edit or vegas it still lags and is also blurred at any resolution.
Tried to fix by reinstalling windows and directx with no luck:(

If example Virtualdub plays those captures blurry and they are captured with your monitors native resolution, there might some issues with Fraps decoder.

I have reinstalled, updated the registered fraps but no change :(
I have no idea what could be causing this but it seems to be nothing simple so i guess i will have to except it at this time and move on, which is a shame, I really wanted to make a movie.
I thank you both for your time and help

There are other software like fraps. D3DGear comes to my mind.
