vlc is playing fast sound and audio on vista please help

hello i have just installed the latest vlc player on windows vista everything has just been formatted and a fresh install when i play either an avi file xvid or divx the sound and the video are playing like they are being put on fast forward did this on the last installation of vista what i had on for months so i re did everything can any one help been on a lot of forum pages looking but cant seem to find any thing out any help please been using vlc for a couple of years now and this is the first problem i have had thanks in advance

no system is standard graphics card is an asus nvidia geforce 7300gs nothing been touched all standard it happened to me the other day so did a full install yesterday and installed vlc and get the same thing everything is playing in high speed sound as well installed klm codec pack but still the same. downloaded divx player and everything plays ok on that all my avi files like vlc its the only thing ive used when it comes on i dont get anything come up saying changing visual to basic like others do any ideas
oh i have got direct x 10 installed does this make any difference

has anyone found a solution to this problem? the same thing is happening to me with every file type I open using VLC. No other programs are having the same problem. This happened on my old system after I downloaded some updates from Microsoft, except that every program, including system sounds, were played too fast. I reloaded windows because I was having some other problems too, and everything was working fine, but I stupidly put auto-updates on, because I couldn't figure out how to install them manually. The problem came back as soon as the updates kicked in, so I rolled back all the updates back and now everything works except VLC. I tried reinstalling VLC and deleting all preferences when I did it, but no luck.
Vista Business 32 bit. AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4400+ 2.30 GHz. 2 gigs PQI ram.

Have you turned up the playback speed? Does it say x1.00 in the statusbar of VLC?

I had this same problem. Enabling 'HPET' in the power management settings in BIOS fixed it for me... Good Luck
