unable to display Unicode subtitle correctly.. pelase help

Postby OniShinobi » 29 May 2007 14:47

I have a .srt file as the subtitle file. It is in Simplified Chinese and is saved as a Unicode text file. When i open it with Notepad, all of the characters display correctly.

After reading pretty much of these issues, i've changed the Subtitle Text renderer file that vlc uses, to Arial Unicode (True Type). Now vlc displays the chinese characters, instead of the usual squares but another problem has occurred.

For most of the subtitle sentences, there will be 2 question marks at the end of the line. I've discovered that the original subtitles disappears after that 2 questions.

What i literally mean is that, if the line consists of 5 characters:
Q W E R T

Whats displayed inside vlc is
Q W E ? ?

Thats the prob that i get. But by adding a number of spaces infront or behind the subtitles equivalent to the number of missing characters, the missing character will appear..

Means if i edit the .srt file from
Q W E R T

To:
? ? Q W E R T
-or-
Q W E R T ? ?

All the chinese characters will then be displayed..

Sorry for the long descriptions, please do help me..

Hi I came across this thread while searching for solution to the same problem as OniShinobi. OniShinobi, did you solve the problem? My VLC version is 0.8.6d, running on winxp. If yes, can you share the solution? Thanks.

I've tried your method and finally got the chinese subs out too. But I get the same problem as you too (with the 2 ? at the end replacing the last 2 chinese words). Any solutions yet?

If you get wrong output with nightlies, you should make bug report to trac.

Hi,

I'm experiencing the exact same problem as descibed in the first post of this thread. However, I'm on a Mac (Mac OS X 10.5.7 and VLC 0.9.9a Grishenko (Intel)), so this problem might not be Windows-specific.

Here are two screenshots showing the problem:

Changing the encoding to many different types did not help.

It does not happens with all subtitle files. I can send this .srt file to any developer who is interested in looking into this problem, just send me a private message.

Thanks,
Peter

I don't know how, but I think this entire topic should be moved to a general bugs-sections, since the reports came in from both Windows and Mac users.
