problems with .SFD movie/video clips in Path of Neo

I am having all kinds of problems playing the movie/video clips (.SFD file extension) in Matrix Path of Neo, both inside and outside of the game. Gspot tells me they are MPEG-1 format but it will not render properly, something about the MPEG-1 stream splitter and the input and output pins.

I have tried 10 different Nvidia video card drivers. I have tried reinstalling DirectX 9.0C. I have tried uninstalling the game and installing in safe mode.

Finally I installed VLC media player because Wikipedia said it resolved conflicts/problems with codecs. Finally I got somewhere, using VLC media player to load the .SFD files, the video clips played perfectly although with no sound. Is the no sound typical for all MPEG-1 files?

So I know my computer is capable of playing the video properly somehow. Is there a way to find out what codec the VLC media player is using to play the .SFD video?
