frames per second default/set

Postby eurfyl » 10 Sep 2007 19:40

Hi all...,

I have setup a video stream and I have two questions:
1) what is the VLC default setting for the frames per second?
2) I am relatively new to VLC and have no experience with using VLC through the terminal/command line so is there a way of setting the frames per second in preferences or something???

Many thanks in advance

The FPS of a file is determined in the file header, and not VLC. It is possible to rewrite the file so that it uses a different No. FPS, e.g. using VirtualDub, which can either convert the FPS (thus keeping the same speed), or just change it (thus changing the speed).

As far as I'm aware VLC cannot change the FPS. You could, however, try changing the playback speed (Play faster, Play slower).

Arite.

Ok I understand that..........but I am using a webcam as the video source- so in this case would you say that the frames per second would be 30 as that is what is stated on the actual webcam. I take it VLC can handle 30fps and if I want to change this then the best way I guess will have to be through using terminal/command line window?

Thanks

OK, right - sorry about my previous post - It was rather rushed and I didn't read your post properly.

VLC should capture via DirectShow at, in your webcams case, 30fps (a standard frame rate) by default .

However, the commandline:

Code: Select all

–sout-transcode-fps=30.0
Where "30.0" is your desired FPS, should allow you to change the frame rate (Just add to VLC's MRL - the "Customise" section in "Advanced Options" upon opening).

That shouldn't be necessary as you are not streaming from a RAW stream - although perhaps setting it to e.g. 25fps might be useful (PAL).

Cheers, Arite.
