What all media formats does VLC media player not support?

Postby Amitanshu Gour » 12 Aug 2007 19:18

What all media formats does VLC media player not support? I am asking this cause' VLC media player is known for supporting a large number of media formats and I wanted to know if there are some media formats out there that VLC media player does not support so that I can get the corresponding media players for those formats for the time being. I also wanted to know since I have QuickTime Player as well as VLC Media Player on my computer, whether I need QuickTime since a lot of formats are supported by VLC or is it appropriate to remove it since it is occupying my hard disk space.

you can safely remove quicktime player, vlc supports all the formats supported by QT

for the codecs, the most important codecs missing in vlc are RealVideo 9 and 10, you can install real alternative instead but you will need Media Player Classic.

VLC DOES NOT SUPPORT REAL VIDEO NOR REAL AUDIO

note that work is being done in ffmpeg to support these codecs ;)

Thanks, in fact I had already removed QuickTime Player before asking this question and if someone would have said you need it,I would have reinstalled it but it was occupying hard disk space and what's the use having several media players when one media player i.e. VLC media player supports all their formats. One last question- I have Windows Media Player as you know it is bundled with Windows and I don't have Winamp, do I need these players as well? Windows Media Player if not needed can be removed if not completely using Control Panel>Add Remove Programs>Windows Components so if it is not needed then I can remove it as well and I had asked the earlier question what all media formats does VLC media player not support for one simple reason, many times you come across formats which one media player does not support and it leaves you in a fix, if somehow VLC media player does not support a particular format then I can beforehand look for the corresponding player for that format, now that I know realplayer formats for the time being are not supported,I can go for it temporarily, but are there any other formats that VLC currently does not support? and yes do I need Windows Media Player and Winamp at all?

you can get the answer from
http://www.videolan.org/vlc/features.html.

under windows, VLC does not support AMR audio, which Quicktime can decode.
