Converting DVD to MP3, and bookmarks

Hi there,

apologies if I'm not using the correct terminology or asking dumb questions - I'm not too familiar with multimedia stuff.

I have a DVD, the type that can be viewed on TV, with different selections of chapters available.

I have 2 unrelated questions:

1) I would like to convert two of these chapters to an MP3 format. Is this possible? I've tried to have a play around and ended up doing this:
- Ran the chapter
- Went File >> Wizard
- Transcode/Save to file
- Existing playlist item, partial extract from 0:00:30 to 0:00:59 (I selected a short duration as a test)
- Transcode audio, MP3, 192kb/s
- ASF
- Saved to Desktop\test.asf
As soon as I was done, VLC went back to compact mode, no image, and the status indicated Streaming/Transcoding Wizard. The file was 0kb after I left it for a full minute. Where did I go wrong?

2) I would like to put several bookmarks and save them for later use. I've found that there's an Extract button that will do that, but it will take me to the Transcode/Save to file wizard, which I don't know how to use. Yet. Is this correct, or is there another way to create and save bookmarks?

hello,

do you want to extract only the audio part of the DVD ?
for that you'll have to select file audio output in the preferences, and then only play the section you want to get. i.e. no need for the transcode wizard.

about the bookmarks, vlc doesn't support it.

Thanks for your reply Funman, yes I only want to extract audio, to play on my iPod. I tried the following:

- Played the DVD
- Paused it where it was about to start the section I want to record
- Went Settings >> Preferences >> Audio >> Output modules >> File
- Indicated a path, and filename: extract1.wav
- Clicked on Save
- Played the DVD
- Stopped the DVD where I wanted the section to end

But I can't see the file being created there at all?

when you want to change the output module, you have to STOP, not only pause.

so you may have to start the DVD, jump to the section you want to record, and so have some extra seconds at the beginning of the file.

after that you may edit the .wav file with something like audacity

I'm so confused and feel quite dumb I normally can work out software pretty well, but this is beyond me.

I'm operating v0.8.5 on a Vista OS btw, if it makes a difference.

So I tried doing it this way:

- Set up the file output module settings
- Played the DVD (it just displayed a list of chapters to play)
- Selected the chapter to play
- Stopped the DVD after 30secs
- Copied/pasted the filepath in the Run command, but it still couldn't find it.

Aaaargh... I'm so about to give up...

This commandline will convert a chapter of a dvd to an mp3 file
vlc.exe dvd://DVD Source(e.g. D:)@Number of title:Number of chapter :no-video :sout=#transcode{acodec=mp3,ab=192,channels=2}:duplicate{dst=std{access=file,mux=dummy,dst="destination file (e.g. C:\out.mp3)"}}

Thanks altglass, would love to try this command line but it doesn't seem to want to launch vlc (see error message below).
Weird, as I can run winword, calc, wmplayer etc just fine.

Does it have anything to do with the way I've ran / installed VLC?

I'm sure I'm close to it...

Also, how do I work out the filename, title number and chapter number? I normally just go Open Directory as the filenames under VIDEO_TS are rather cryptic. Opening them one by one only succeeds in some of them actually showing something, but the sound is choppy and the image quality is extremely low, as if it was coded.

I'm running v0.8.5 on Vista, did I need to upgrade anything?

Windows cannot find 'vlc.exe'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again.

make sure you have first navigated to the installation directory of VLC, via the cd command. Or just copy the commandline I mentioned into a textfile and save it with .bat as extension instead of .txt inside the vlc folder and then doubleclick the file.

I've finally managed to work out how to do the conversion, so thanks for that!

I just have two last questions:

1) How can I identify which file is the correct one to use (see my previous post for details, which I was editing while you replied to me)
2) The sound seems to run twice as fast as it should be, as if it had been recorded on fast forward mode.

during conversion you normally won't see and hear anything except the progress bar. Also check if you set the speed to 2x, should appear in the status bar.

is it possible that VLC close automatically after chapter ripping is done by adding a command line parameter ?

If it's possible, I can make my own batcher for all my DVD music (concert) ripping
