Choppy Audio and Video

Hi, I'm getting choppy audio and video, it doesnt happen all the time but enough for it to be annoying. Can anyone help?

Can you please give some more information? What type of format is the video? How does it run on other media players? Has it always been doing this with VLC media player? Stuff…?

But here are some quick suggestions anyway:

• 1. Upgrade to the latest video and sound card drivers.
  
  2. If it works fine in other media players, upgrade to the latest version of VLC.
  
  3. Still not working? Reset the preferences folder: C:/Documents and Settings/User (Your user name)/Application Data (this folder is hidden, you have to make it visible)/vlc. Delete the “vlc” folder.

Hopefully one of them will work for you. (edit?)

No it hasn't always been doing it, its DVD format, its from an external hard drive, i havent tried it in other meida players...

I think thats about it. Oh its a fresh install so I haven't changed any of the settings and my sound and video drivers are the latest as is VLC.

Sometimes Windows updates can affect VLC media player. Did you try the third option? You could also try changing the video output: Preferences > Video > Output modules. Choose an output, save and restart VLC.

Changing output modules for XP is only for testing purposes and when it works always points to DirectX or more likely the video drivers.

Video jitter on the other hand points to audio drivers. As all digital video is follow audio for sync.

If there are certain high resolutions effecting the performance, look at CPU usage. Your machine may be to slow to do the resolution of the video.

No its ok now I fixed the problem, it was my USB drivers, they were corrupt or something, I reinstalled them and now everything is fine. Thanx for the help though.
