MKV format

Postby florida_dpk » 24 Jan 2007 18:49

Using the streaming/transcoding wizard in the VLC media player, what would I convert the file format (MKV) to play? Thanks in advance.

Stream and media info, advanced info or a third party utility like GSpot.

GSpot, last time i checked, has no support for matroska MKV files. The best tool is Mediainfo http://mediainfo.sf.net

I hate DirectShow, VLC is my player of choice for most purposes these days.

Haali Splitter is excellent, but its nevertheless a DirectShow filter, and half of the support requests we received, before we started promoting VLC to our matroska users, were DShow incompatibilities between several filters.

Of course, i do have Haali splitter installed on all my PCs and for some MKV files (like those with Realvideo content) there is no other choice than using DShow, but in reality i am using VLC more and more ...

The Haali splitter is excellent and I continue to stay updated, but I really wish he would or could do 4 things.

1. Fix the thumbnail viewer that randomly still crashes Windows Explorer.

2. Update OGG/OGM to be fully backward compatible to Tobias and not crash Windows Explorer with the thumbnail viewer.

3. Finish the MPEG TS support so that we could use H.264. I'm tired of the oddities with Gabest's MPEG TS support.

4. Get off the Windows 2k system he uses for testing.

If you want to get a kick transcode into div3, vorbis and use the OGG/OGM container in VLC and you will instantly see what I mean. If the Tobias Direct Show filters are used it works. Of coarse it wouldn't hurt if the Developers of VLC would update OGG/OGM when used for transcoding either.

While some here are having issues with Matroska and VLC, I am NOT and all my transcodes and downloads look good even with h.264 HD. Just wish there would be a description of the Menu system or was it finishing the menu system??? I have only come across the demo and it does kinda sorta work.

Haali Media Splitter
Changes
07/03/2007
New Features:
Improved gdsmux.
Added support for S_TEXT/ASCII subtitles to the DS muxer filter.
Added support for H.264 in MPEG-PS.That's for you DJ,no ?
Improved support for DD+ in MPEG-PS.
Added a bitrate graph to the renderer OSD (only active when the splitter is used as source).
Added some support for PCM an ulaw audio in qt files.
Added automatic linking of VOB files.
Fixed items:
Renderer: eliminated an incompatibility with geforce 5 hardware.
Renderer: fixed a distroted picture with some VfW codecs.
Fixed a problem with seeking in MPEG-PS/TS

I've been using heavily this media splitter (Latest,as often as possible=depends on my lazyness) + Core avc + WMP11 for three months now and the thumbnail viewer never crashed anything.
Dj,can you give me an example where this happens ?
Thank you.

Consistently transcoding (using VLC) anything into DIV3 and Vorbis in a OGG/OGM container. But randomly with anything else except Matroska. I use Haali for everything that's supported under Direct Show. Please note that Haali does not play the OGG/OGM files made by VLC but the Tobias filters do.

Perhaps part of the problem here is that VLC has not been updated in this area in a very long time.
