MP4 files - audio plays fine but only first frame of video

Hi all,
I'm feeling frustrated... I have had problems with playing good mp4 files with Windows 10 - they are very juddery, from known good mp4 source files.

I thought I had the solution with downloading VLC as it comes widely recommended, but even with VLC I find that I only get good audio, and only the first frame only of the video. Nice pics, but they don't actually show any movement!!! I have looked at the FAQs and tried to find info on the forum, but now I can't see the wood for the trees. How come playing an mp4 file is so damn difficult, and I thought VLC was supposed to have all the right codecs installed, that I understand are required?

I've tried other formats, eg .mov files, and they play perfectly well.

There surely must be a straightforward answer to this within VLC, as I can't be the only numpty one with this problem, so thanks in advance for any help!

Is vlc set as the default player? And also the default player for mp4 files? See this tutorial to check your settings.

Hi, could you try to provide some logs ? Maybe your mp4 file is just broken and no player would play it ?

To help you, we need messages, to completely understand what your problems is.
To fix this, please be sure before you start the playback to:

1. Open: Tools -> Messages.
2. Set Verbosity to 2
3. Start playback to reproduce your issue
4. Save text in a file or copy into clipboard
5. Then paste the full resulting log here between [​code]and[​/code] (or use Pastebin.com if it's too long)

Also don't forget to name your Operating System and provide the VLC media player version.

Thanks Hitchhiker - I set default player to VLC in both settings default and for mp4. No difference, still no video, just first frame. Some mp4 files stutter the odd bit of vid playback as well.

Also, thanks Unidan, I am using Windows 10, and older (up to 2016) mp4 files have played just fine. All newer mp4s seem to have this problem, multiple mp4 files, all of which played completely OK on players used pre Windows 10 update. The newer mp4 files have mostly been taken with my Samsung Note 3 - please note all files were fine pre the Windows 10 update, and all still play perfectly well on the phone.

I have set the Verbosity to 2 as suggested, and attach the debug playback from trying to play one short mp4 file. Hope helps, if you can see anything - sorry, seems a bit long! Thanks for helping.

Thanks Hitchhiker - I set default player to VLC in both settings default and for mp4. No difference, still no video, just first frame. Some mp4 files stutter the odd bit of vid playback as well.

Part of the readout from your log file:

• avcodec warning: More than 11 late frames, dropping frame
  avcodec error: more than 5 seconds of late video -> dropping frame (computer too slow ?)

Basically, what the log is saying is that your computer is too slow to process the video fast enough.

You could try updating the graphic drivers. According to the log you're using NVIDIA WDDM driver 21.21.13.4201 at the moment which dates from October last year. "WDDM" is an acronym for Windows Display Driver Model which means Windows 10 is installing drivers as and when it feels like it which is not very often in your particular case by the looks of it.

You can try using Device Manager to search for driver updates for the Nvidia card by hitting Windows key + X to open the power users menu and then click Device Manager. From there expand Display Adapters and then right click the Nvidia adapter and click "Update driver software".

If that doesn't work or results in Windows telling you that the best driver is already installed, go to the Nvidia site to download drivers manually. Select the video card which is in the machine from the dropdown menus and then download the new drivers. Uncheck the option to install the Nvidia GeForce Experience since it has nothing to do with the drivers and is just an advertising medium.

Before you run the setup file, create a System Restore point so that you can revert to the drivers you have installed already if something goes wrong. If you don't know how to do that see this tutorial

The problem is that the GPU can't decode H264 in 4K. So it falls back to software. And the CPU is too slow to decode it in real time. So only the first frame is displayed.

Er... thanks guys, have checked driver and shows best driver already installed, which I'm pretty sure was same graphics card/driver I had pre Windows 10 when all was well...

Just seems to be some kind of incompatibility thing going on somewhere.

Well, if you're not willing to update the graphics drivers, the only thing I can suggest is to stream your .mp4 files in future. All you need is the link to the videos. On Youtube for example, click the "Share" button below the video and then copy the URL which appears in there. Once you've opened vlc, hit CTRL+N and paste the URL into the field provided and then click "Play".
