VLC 3.0.15 update not working

Updated from VLC 3.0.9.2 Vetinari to 3.0.15.
Dell xps 8700 computer, Windows 8.1, Video card GE Force GTX 645 (an old card)



After VLC update, attempting to play any mp4 video causes VLC to close.
When reopening VLC, I receive a message asking about sending an error report, which I do.
Clicking on any mp4 file causes VLC to close again.

Cleared preferences and cache - no change
Uninstalled / reinstalled - no change

Reverted to VLC 3.0.9.2 - Working again.

Same for me with a GT 740. I just can't play anything with D3D11, works fine with D3D9.

As you said, it looks like lots of similar reports are coming up.
I'm hoping this means a fix will be in the works.

Along with every other Win 8.1 user I can confirm that the 3.0.15 installation exits when trying to play a video.

Also, when running the installer again the option to uninstall vlc which appears doesn't work either and it needs to be removed via Programs and Features in Control Panel.

Windows Action Center ---> Reliability Monitor didn't record the failure unfortunately so there's no data available on that score I'm afraid.

Just for the record, we pulled this update from our website and did not enable the internal updater for this update because of this problem.

Does the nightly have the same problem?

Do you have a test suite that builds must pass to be promoted to a release? If so, hopefully you've added a test to verify playback in each output format and decoding strategy.

What GPU drivers are you guys running?

I have a Nvdia GT 710 on Windows 10 21.H1 running the latest Nvidia drivers and VLC 3.0.15 runs fine for me.

Only issue I noticed was no auto update from 3.0.14 to 3.0.15.

It's 3.0.15 portable.

Only at the first startup after starting the PC, it takes a long time to start
This matter has been fixed.
Earlier version, maybe just the result of a bug fix
I don't know if it was a sequela of the update trouble.

I just tested the 32-bit version of 3.0.16 and it plays audio / video without a problem on my Windows 8.1 OS.

The problem 3.0.16 is intended to address is that 3.0.15 doesn't work on Windows 8.1
On Windows 10 or 7 there wasn't a problem.

It crashes straight when trying to play any video with D3D11:




D3D9 is working but there is the left ↔ right orange buffering signal for some seconds in the timeline before it starts to play.

No problems encountered with the 64-bit version of 3.0.16.
